Free kid-friendly events this week in Brooklyn (7/22-7/28)

It’s another week packed with free family-friendly summer events! This week’s overview includes dumpling making at Brooklyn Children’s Museum, a Dominican music festival in Domino Park, a dance party and film screening celebrating Prince’s Purple Rain in Brooklyn Bridge Park, performances by the Bindlestiff Family Cirkus in Bushwick, and a live music celebration of George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue under the Brooklyn Bridge. Plus, so many sports, movement classes, outdoor movies, and kid-friendly musical performances in our parks.

Pier 2 Roller Rink offers free admission hours on Mondays, Fridays, and Sundays. Roller skate with amazing views of the Brooklyn Bridge and lower Manhattan! Skate rental is $8 per person.

Each Tuesday, St. Ann & The Holy Trinity Church serves 100+ neighbors in need of fresh produce and other essentials. Over the summer months, they have fewer volunteers and could use some help! Tasks include setting up tables, organizing and greeting patrons, cleaning, breaking down boxes, and other assigned work. Volunteers must be responsible, reliable, eager to learn, and have a great attitude.

Brooklyn’s kindie titans Rolie Polie Guacamole, have been perfecting their show over the last decade scooping up several Parents’ Choice awards along the way. Skate Everything School is hosting free youth skateboard lessons at Golconda Skate Park this summer! Week by week, we will go over all the styles and safety basics to get participants comfortable and confident on a skateboard and in a skate park. Join us for Suzi Shelton’s fun-filled musical performance! Local performer Suzi Shelton has been recognized as a voice in independent family music for over a decade. We are excited to be launching TALKSPACE’s Teen Tuesdays, an inclusive and welcoming fitness-focused series for teens in all five boroughs of NYC! Join TALKSPACE and FLEXIT for a 45-minute outdoor fitness class that will start with a high- energy workout led by trainers from FLEXIT, the leader in virtual personal wellness delivering personal training, nutrition, yoga and much more. Youth Basketball Clinic with King Hoops | Pier 2 @ Brooklyn Bridge Park

This will be the last free basketball clinic with King Hoops at Brooklyn Bridge Park  this summer! Players may join for individual weeks or the full season. The first hour (5-6 PM) will be for beginner players who are brand new to the sport. Here they will teach the very basic fundamentals of the game, the rules of the game, and getting acclimated to having a ball in each player’s hands. The second hour (6 – 7 PM) is geared for advanced beginners to intermediate players who have played a little bit more basketball. Advanced registration and waivers are required. Registration opens a week ahead of each date.

The Cobble Hill Association will close out their summer concert series in partnership withThe Winter Social with their Second Annual SUMMER SWING! Once again, featuring the incredible Buck and a Quarter Band. Buck And A Quarter is the NYC-based string band that plays forgotten gems and favorites of the golden age of American pop and vintage-inspired originals in a category-defying style, described as ‘skiffle meets Cole Porter’ and ‘what do you call this kind of music?’ Since 2014, Buck And A Quarter Quartet has appeared regularly at great clubs and venues throughout New York City, including Sunny’s Bar, Skinny Dennis, Luckydog, Jalopy Tavern, Anyway Café, Pete’s Candy Store, Rockwood Music Hall, Joe’s Pub, 11th St. Bar, Superfine, and more. They appear the third Wednesday of every month at Barbès, have had long-running residencies at Freddy’s Bar, KGB Bar’s Red Room, SISTERS Bklyn, and Jimmy’s No. 43, and have also played throughout the northeast at venues including the Tri-State Jazz Society and The Pennsylvania Jazz Society.

Dance and Music with Cumbe | Fort Greene Park

Join us at Monument Plaza for dance workshops hosted by us in partnership with the Cumbe Center for African and Diaspora Dance! No prior dance experience is needed. This event is family-friendly, and kids are encouraged to join us. All ages are welcome. Watch master artist, Shari Cheverez, perform, then experience the joy and learn the movements through a class and a dance jam.

Free Admission at New York Aquarium | Coney Island

Take advantage of free admission hours at the New York Aquarium in Coney Island, from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Wednesdays. The aquarium’s Aquatheater is now reopened after renovations, and the sea lions and their trainers are performing once again! Coastal Cleanup | Brooklyn Bridge Park

Volunteers, as a group, cleanup our coastlines by helping to remove debris that has washed into the marshes and beaches with the tides. No volunteer orientation or experience is required, but note that this activity may involve some rock scrambling.

Live at the Archway is an annual series of free concerts and visual art in the unique setting of the Dumbo Archway. Jerron Paxton (formerly “Blind Boy” Paxton) and Dennis Lichtman are both world-renowned multi-instrumentalists and vocalists whose musical friendship has grown organically in New York City for more than a decade. Their formal partnership began with a video shoot, Just Cross the River From Queens, at the Louis Armstrong House Museum in 2017. Emily Nam brings her sensorial interplay between color and shape to the Art Wall.

The Summer Music Series at BIP returns for its fourth year! 6 weekly evening concerts featuring jazz, Caribbean, Latin and old-time music will take place on the 86 Kent Avenue waterfront plaza of Bushwick Inlet Park. Midsummer Nights: Four Evenings of Music at Brooklyn Conservatory of Music | Park Slope

Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy will mark this momentous anniversary with a dance party tribute from 6:30 to 8:30 PM as a DJ plays Prince hits, and the film screening begins at sundown. Join us for an unforgettable celebration of art, culture, and community in the heart of Brooklyn’s waterfront. Enjoy drinks on site by Bar by Fornino. Hedgework: Engaging Through Your Senses | Brooklyn Navy Yard

Join us for an immersive opportunity for children ages 3-8 and their caretakers at Hedgework, a sentient hedgerow at Building 77, commissioned by the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Visitors will explore the hedgerow through the senses (sight, smell, sound, and touch) and then, using different art supplies and modes of representation, visitors will be encouraged to record and represent their observations. Each family will receive a tote bag with materials. This program will be led by prominent educator, Margaret Gillis, PhD.

Free Outdoor Art Making with Private Picassos | Park Slope

Private Picassos will set up an outdoor Art Studio for kids to work on two free art projects (watercolor painting and drawing exploration), as well as sidewalk chalk to decorate 5th Avenue! Projects are great for kids age 1.5 and up and be available between 11am-3pm. PP will also offer a prize wheel for families to spin for a chance to win a free day of Summer Camp, free Day Passes for Art Making and a free Art Class. All participants can also grab a free PP Artist sticker and color our extra large coloring sheets. This event is in partnership with Park Slope Open Streets.

7th Annual HealthJox Festival | Brooklyn Bridge Park

Basketball games – organized by BK-Network, attendees will enjoy a healthy day of co-ed basketball clinics hosted by “NY Liberty”; “Ladies Who Hoop” to run the female basketball tournaments; “BK-Network” to run the male basketball tournaments; AirOdart & Pickle Ball will be managed by Coach Ted Gustus. Paper Making Workshop | Governors Island

In con­nec­tion with her site-spe­cif­ic instal­la­tion ​Monarch Migra­tions” in the spa­cious stair­well of Art­Crawl Harlem’s house in Colonels Row, artist Michele Brody will demon­strate and teach vis­it­ing par­tic­i­pants how to make paper from local­ly sourced milk­weed plants. This hands-on pro­gram will intro­duce par­tic­i­pants to the basics of mak­ing sheets of paper from nat­u­ral­ly for­aged mate­ri­als. Par­tic­i­pants will expe­ri­ence the many stages of how to regen­er­ate milk­weed plants into hand­made paper origa­mi but­ter­flies for her evolv­ing site-spe­cif­ic instal­la­tion high­light­ing the need for more nat­ur­al diver­si­ty in New York City.

Taoist Tai Chi® Demonstration | Governors Island

Join  for an out­door demon­stra­tion of the Taoist Tai Chi® arts! This event is orga­nized by 2024RU artist Ai Sug­iu­ra on behalf of Sab­bat­i­cal Com­pa­ny—an artist col­lec­tive of four women Japan­ese artists — which focus­es on build­ing com­mu­ni­ty and engag­ing in phys­i­cal activ­i­ty to sup­port a health­i­er, more sus­tain­able life­long jour­ney as artists. In this demon­stra­tion, par­tic­i­pants from the New York City branch of the Taoist Tai Chi Soci­ety of the USA will demon­strate the Taoist Tai Chi® arts. Known by some as mov­ing med­i­ta­tion, the Taoist Tai Chi® arts embody the teach­ings of the late Mas­ter Moy Lin Shin and the Fung Loy Kok Insti­tute of Tao­ism to cul­ti­vate strength, flex­i­bil­i­ty, and still­ness. Even begin­ners can fol­low along by observ­ing oth­ers and mov­ing gen­tly in sync with the group, which fos­ters a sense of com­mu­ni­ty. Through this one-hour expe­ri­en­tial work­shop, join Ai Sug­iu­ra and the mas­ters of Taoist Tai Chi Soci­ety to share a relax­ing time mov­ing slow­ly amidst the nature of Gov­er­nors Island. This event is open to all, no pri­or expe­ri­ence necessary.

Bindlestiff Family Cirkus’ Flatbed Follies is an outdoor mobile venue that brings the performing arts into the streets. Developed in response to COVID, Flatbed Follies instantly became a vehicle offering joy and wonder to a recovering world. Performances take place upon innovative parade float stages modified to present circus acts. There is even a calliope wagon providing authentic circus music. Developed in 2021 with the support of NYC’s Department of Transportation and the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment, Flatbed Follies quickly became a DIY WPA for performing artists in New York. Providing work for more than 200 artists and crew each year, the 2022 season entertained more than 30,000 people across 50 city neighborhoods.
