Free kid-friendly events this week in Brooklyn (7/6-7/12)

This week is packed with ways to entertain your family, including touring ships in Brooklyn Bridge Park, making art in Sunset Park, attending an Italian American feast in Williamsburg, watching a magic show in DUMBO, looking for birds on Governors Island, hanging out at a street fair in Flatbush, dancing at a music festival in Fort Greene, and much more!

MONDAY

Sail 4th 250 Tall Ships | Brooklyn Bridge Park

Sunday, July 5th-Tuesday, July 7th | 12:00pm-6:00pm | Reservations strongly recommended 

America welcomes the tall ships of the world to the Port of New York and New Jersey for a universal celebration of America’s 250th anniversary! Sail4th 250 brings several to dock at Brooklyn Bridge Park, open for tours July 5th, 6th, and 7th from 12:00pm-6:00pm on most days. While tall ship tours are FREE of charge, reservations are strongly recommended due to high demand. Your reservation will guarantee your spot during your selected time frame. Children must be five and older to board the ships and require a ticket. Strollers are permissible on the piers but are not allowed aboard the tall ships. Closed-toe shoes are required to board the ships. This event is rain-or-shine.

Free Admission Days at the Pier 2 Roller Skating Rink | Brooklyn Bridge Park

Mondays & Fridays | 3:30pm-6:00pm | FREE admission but skate rental is $8 and skate mate rental is $6

Come to the Pier 2 Roller Skating Rink for some free family fun and exercise. Enjoy the fresh air and gorgeous views as you skate around the rink.

World Cup Bowl: USA vs. Belgium | Williamsburg

Brooklyn Bowl is hosting the biggest and best watch party for USA vs Belgium! With 13 huge screens, full concert sound, and food & drink specials, this is exactly where you want to be to watch the match!

Stay Cool! Presented by Brooklyn Children’s Museum | Bensonhurst

Brooklyn is home to people from all over the world. Explore the various ways in which people stay cool around the world with artifacts from Brooklyn Children’s Museum’s Collection. Then design your own invention for staying cool this summer! This event will take place at the New Utrecht Library.

Free Open Art Space | Sunset Park

Tuesdays, starting July 7th | 4:00pm-6:00pm

Come make art, enjoy free food, and connect with local artists at RISE UP Family Enrichment Center. No RSVP is needed, just swing by!

New Mom Meet Up at Fontainhas | DUMBO

Tuesdays | 4:30pm-6:00pm

Bring your baby to Fontainhas for some cozy chai and hang with other new moms. Hosted every week by the new mom pop-up POST.

 

WEDNESDAY

Lora Heller – Baby Fingers: A Musical Journey through Language and Learning | Crown Heights

Wednesday, July 8th | 10:30am-11:30am | Ages 0-5

Learn new songs and sing your favorites as you learn signs from ASL to support language development, self-expression, and bilingualism. See the research come to life, as music and sign language both aid in the development of language and literacy; these classes are designed for babies who are hearing and Deaf, with and without special needs. Give the gift of communication and bond with your baby at Baby Fingers. Come sing & sign together. This event will take place at the Crown Heights Library.

Storytime in the Park | Fort Greene

Wednesdays in May-October | 11:00am

Sing, read, and play with librarians from Walt Whitman Library in Fort Greene Park! Have fun hearing great picture books read aloud and playing with other children during this program. For children of all ages and their caregivers. This program will be located at the bottom of the Monument stairs near Myrtle Playground and runs on Wednesdays at 11:ooam-11:45am from May 13th-October 14th.

Free Admission at New York Aquarium | Coney Island

Wednesdays | 3:00pm-6:00pm | Reserve tickets here; free tickets are made available at 3pm the Monday before

Take advantage of free admission hours at the New York Aquarium from 3:00-6:00pm on Wednesdays. Note that advance timed tickets are required (max of 4 per group); the Wednesday Afternoon Ticket Store will open on Monday at 3:00pm for that Wednesday’s reservations.

Our Lady of Mount Carmel Feast | Williamsburg

Since 1887, the Italian American community has been celebrating their faith, culture, and family traditions on the streets of Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Each July, the streets are filled with revelers from near and far to take part in a centuries old tradition known as the Dancing of the Giglio. For 12 days, the streets surrounding the Shrine Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel are transformed into a vibrant festival, with food vendors, rides, games, and daily entertainment.

Calling all parents and caregivers with children! Join a Prospect Park Alliance Naturalist for a leisurely stroll along Prospect Park’s waterways. Embrace the sound of streams and songs of birds, while enjoying fragrant flowers and the towering trees of Brooklyn’s Backyard. Please note that this walk leaves promptly at 10:00am the Prospect Park Boathouse.

Outdoor Fun | Dyker Heights

Thursday, July 9th | 11:00am-12:00pm

Spend time outside in the library garden with sidewalk chalk, hula hoops, cornhole, bowling, and other fun activities! This event will take place at the Dyker Library.

Movies With A View: Hamilton | Brooklyn Bridge Park

Thursday, July 9th (rescheduled from last week) | 6:00pm-11:00pm

Hamilton (PG-13, 2020, 160 minutes), New York’s own Lin-Manuel Miranda’s imaginative retelling of American founding father Alexander Hamilton. This is the filmed version of the Broadway production – singing along is encouraged! Come early to enjoy a picnic on the lawn and refreshing waterfront breezes, with New York Harbor and Manhattan skyline views like no other as the sun sets. Entry is free and first-come, first serve starting at 6:00 PM. Movies begin at sunset.

Sydra Mallery launches Stubby: A Pencil’s Journey with Kyra Wolfe

Librarians from Brooklyn Public Library’s Adams St and Brooklyn Heights branches will join to lead storytime each week. Bring a blanket, some snacks, and enjoy a relaxing late afternoon in the shade of Pier 1’s The Vale Lawn.

Family Kayaking | Brooklyn Bridge Park

Glide along the water this summer and fall in Brooklyn Bridge Park’s protected embayment with free public kayaking! Presented in partnership with Brooklyn Bridge Park Boathouse, free kayaking is offered throughout the summer on Wednesday and Thursday evenings, Saturdays, and Sunday afternoons. All levels are welcome including first-time kayakers — life vests and all equipment provided, as well as instruction. Children under 18 must have an adult guardian present. Meet at the north entrance of Pier 2, look for the floating dock. Their Sunday program is specifically geared for kids and families, allowing younger paddlers to go solo in single kayaks! Kids aged 7 and older can paddle solo (as long as a guardian is present) thanks to additional on-water safety boaters from The Kayak Foundation who are specially trained to work with kids. Advanced registration highly recommended, providing 20 minute timed slots. Registration opens 2 weeks ahead of each date through the Brooklyn Bridge Park Boathouse website. Soul Summit Music Festival | Fort Greene

Over the past fourteen years, Soul Summit Music has become an institution developing a loyal following that brings the hills of Fort Greene Park alive with families, food, and dancing. The festival provides the backdrop for access to music, networking and other activities. In just thirteen years the Soul Summit Music festival has become one of the most anticipated outdoor events in New York City, successfully creating a hub of activity in the immediate community and beyond attracting visitors from all over the tri-state area.
