Youth Basketball Clinics at Brooklyn Bridge Park | DUMBO

Kids can join Brooklyn Bridge Park for free basketball clinics led by KING Hoops, NYC’s premier youth basketball organization. Participants can learn basketball basics as head coaches lead participants through drills and games. Free clinics are held on Saturday mornings from June through August (excluding holiday weekends). The first hour, 9:00am-10:00am, will be for beginner players who are brand new to the sport. Here children will learn the very basic fundamentals of the game, the rules of the game, and getting acclimated to having a ball in each player’s hands. The second hour, 10:00am-11:00am, will be for advanced beginners to intermediate players who have played a little bit more basketball experience. Emphasis will be on ball handling, passing, shooting form, defense, and learning to love the game. This event is rain or shine. It is recommended to bring your own ball. Advanced registration and fitness waivers are required, although walk-up registrations can be accommodated as space allows. Registration is by-the-week and dates open at start of the month. Capacity will be limited to 45 participants per age group.

Have you ever gone fishing in NYC? Join Brooklyn Bridge Park staff to learn about the ecology of the East River as you participate in a free catch-and-release fishing lesson at the Pier 5 fishing stations (at the end of the pier). Presented in partnership with Maritime Youth Alliance. All equipment will be provided; humane hooks will be used. This free fishing program runs for two hours, with each participant/group allowed to fish with the rod for 30 minutes. No experience needed – all equipment and supplies are provided. Per each 30-minute session, they will reserve 15 rods for preregistration booking. They will have extra rods available, but walk-up availability is not guaranteed. All participants must sign a waiver before participating.

The House Crawl will be an an explorative tour of the Organizations in Residence through Nolan Park and Colonels Row, featuring a performance by Pinc Louds at 3:00pm on the Parade Ground. Then Sally Beauti Twin’s signature eco-luminary art parade will take over Nolan Park and Colonels Row, with participants DIY-ing their own costumes, luminaries, and puppets before engaging in a house-to-house parade that honors the flora, fauna, and celestial bodies of Governors Island.

Join Prospect Park Alliance and joseph webb and friends for an interactive and engaging exploration of tap dance, affectionately called The Dance by tap dancers, and its historical relationship to New York City. Starting with African American Master Juba, considered the father of tap dance, this performance takes the audience on a journey from the early 1800s, through the swing jazz and bebop era to modern-day hip-hop. Attendees will receive a beginner level tap lesson at the start of the program, so they can participate in some of the historic dances to follow. Tap shoes are not required, but if you have them, bring them.
