Free kid-friendly events this week in Brooklyn (8/19-8/25)

There are so many family-friendly free events happening all over Brooklyn this week, including the annual KoKo NYC South Slope Derby, the North Face Climb Festival in Brooklyn Bridge Park, performances by the Bindlestiff Family Cirkus in Red Hook and Prospect Heights, an African pop-up market and a Summer Tea event in Prospect Park, plus events at Green-Wood Cemetery and the Old Stone House in Park Slope to commemorate the Revolutionary War’s Battle of Brooklyn.

Singer Araceli accompanied by her Peruvian instrument, called charango, will teach us Spanish through her songs for children. Occupying six floors at One Willoughby Square, Albee Square Montessori Public School is the first and only public Montessori school in NYC. To celebrate the school’s opening in September 2024, the school is hosting a Welcome Family Day event. The event has two components: the first, sponsored by City Point, is exclusively for registered school families inside the PS 482 school building (4-6pm) and the second part will be a celebration outdoors (weather permitting) sponsored by Downtown Brooklyn Partnership at Abolitionist Place Park. The public is invited to the second part from 5-7:30pm to welcome the school to Downtown Brooklyn. There will be a DJ, giant lawn games, and more!

The aquarium’s Aquatheater is now reopened after renovations, and the sea lions and their trainers are performing once again! Join Prospect Park Alliance for nature education programs on Thursdays and Fridays at the Prospect Park Audubon Center, the first urban Audubon Center in the nation. Programming includes:

  • Nature Around Us: Enjoy different seasonal discovery stations and nature themed activities that will introduce you to the plants, insects and animals that call the park home. The Lake and Lullwater are home to many plants and animals. Help us to test the water quality and investigate pond samples that are filled with living organisms.
  • Animal Encounter: Join Alliance Naturalists in learning more about the animals in the Audubon Center’s collection.
  • Family Bird Walk: Prospect Park is a stopping point for hundreds of bird species each year! Join us as we search for these amazing creatures and other nature around the park. Binoculars and bird guides are provided.

Visit Brooklyn Children’s Museum’s STEM Makerspace: Nature’s Engineers | Crown Heights

Brooklyn Children’s Museum has a new natural science-inspired makerspace, and you can visit it for FREE during Amazon Free Hours on Thursday afternoons! Nature’s Engineers is designed for children to learn from nature and engage in hands-on STEM activities, fostering creativity and critical thinking. This month’s project is making a fossil! Join in August and September to analyze fossils from BCM’s collection. Visitors will practice describing, measuring, and comparing attributes of objects to understand what Earth was like thousands of years ago. Then, visitors will create their own fossil cast inspired by BCM’s collection of fossils!

The Battle of Brooklyn: A Farce of Two Acts at The Old Stone House | Park Slope

Green Team volunteers support essential horticultural care in Brooklyn Bridge Park, completing tasks such as weeding, planting and mulching. This is a great opportunity to learn about gardening, enjoy nature, and make a tangible difference in the Park with a group of other volunteers. Volunteers of all ages are welcome (under 16’s must be accompanied by a parent or guardian) and no volunteer orientation is required. No gardening experience is necessary; we provide all the instructions and tools needed for a rewarding experience! Advance registration is required. Registration opens 2 weeks prior to the start of each month.

Free Dance Classes at Grand Opening of Brooklyn Dance Conservatory | Gowanus

Brooklyn Dance Conservatory is moving to a new location at 497 Carroll Street and will open for drop-in, trial, and placement classes this month. BKDC offers classes starting at age 1, and students may continue on with ballet, hip-hop, modern dance, jazz and tap dance, all the way up to training on a pre-professional level. Join for the studio’s Grand Opening event on Saturday, August 24 with a preview of the space and FREE trial classes! Space in these classes is limited, so don’t wait to sign up!

The Derby is the culmination of KoKo NYC’s summer programming and features gravity-powered, kid-built soap box racers made from recycled materials. During week-long workshops, kids develop their building and engineering skills and express their natural ingenuity as they imagine and construct their sustainable cars. In the South Slope Derby, kids put their creations to the test in a race down 17th Street in South Slope, Brooklyn. Join the community to cheer them on! Led by one of The Bee Conservancy’s staff beekeepers, this hive dive will give an up close and personal view of colony life in TBC’s Bee Sanctuary at Governors Island. Learn about cavity nesters, ground nesters, and conservation steps you can take to help all bees and their habitats. Join Tea Arts & Culture and Prospect Park Alliance for a full-day family-friendly gathering in the park to steep and sip tea together with arts, music and shared appreciation of nature. Embark on a journey to learn about tea and connect with the diverse cultures and communities around us. This event is rain or shine, and will be held inside the Boathouse in the event of rain. Due to this program’s growing popularity, we encourage attendees to bring their own teacup if possible.

  • 11 am–12 pm | Nature Walk, Morning Yoga, and Tea Meditation | Led by the Prospect Park Alliance and Tea Arts & Culture team, you can choose to have a walk through the trails around the Boathouse, join for a morning Yoga, or simply sit for a tea meditation to be more in tune with your body and mind.
  • 12 pm–3 pm | Poem Composing Tree | Gather your thoughts about tea, nature, and community under the Composing Tree and create a poem that you can share with other participants.
  • 12 pm–3 pm | Community Tea Circles | Enjoy a multidisciplinary community art experience with tea circles created by various communities from different cultures. Pablo Neruda’s Odes to Common Things will be incorporated into the program. As Neruda said: “The art of tea, much like the art of poetry, is steeped in tradition and culture but leads to a deeper appreciation of everyday life and what we have in common. Join us!”

Battle of Brooklyn Commemoration and Family Day | Green-Wood Cemetery

The Battle of Brooklyn, fought in August 1776, was the first battle of the American Revolution to occur after the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Also the largest battle of the Revolutionary War, it included a significant engagement on land that is now part of The Green-Wood Cemetery. Join us for a family-friendly afternoon to honor those who fought in the battle and learn more about the diverse world of revolutionary New York! Meet costumed interpreters, see fascinating demonstrations, listen to stories of the revolution, and participate in fun, hands-on activities.

Stop by the Museum’s lobby for performances by some of the city’s best jazz musicians. In August, enjoy an afternoon of spiritual jazz in the tradition of honored musical elders and ancestors. Led by acclaimed bassist and composer Rachiim Ausar-Sahu, a Brooklyn native, the Jazz/Espiritu ensemble features drummer Will Calhoun, percussionist Chief Baba Neil Clarke, keyboardist Brandon McCune, multi-reedist Irwin Hall, and vibraphonist Bryan Carrott.
