This week is all about back to school — with a few big send-offs to summer first! Families can catch Spike Lee’s BK Loves MJ block party, a Michael Jackson dance party in Fort Greene Park, the Japan Village Brooklyn Summer Festival in Sunset Park, bilingual sing-alongs and puppet theater at Play in the Square in Domino Park, backpack giveaways in Sunset Park and Sheepshead Bay, a lacrosse clinic in Brooklyn Bridge Park, an insect hunt in Bergen Beach, and more! Be sure not to miss Brooklyn Bridge Parents’ Back to School Bash at Atlantic Terminal Mall Plaza on Saturday, August 29th!

MONDAY

Summer at the Library: Stomp, Clap, and Sing with Corey | Windsor Terrace

Monday, August 24th | 10:30am-11:30am

Music With Corey is a fun, immersive, educational music experience curated by renowned kids music instructor, Corey J. Feldman. We will freeze dance, we’ll play the guessing game, and we’ll even do some magic! Corey’s music performances are perfect for kids ages 0-6+ with familiar songs, family-friendly covers, and a host of originals (find his album on Spotify!)

TUESDAY

Jack and Friends Presents: Suzi Shelton | Park Slope

Tuesday, August 25th | 4-4:45pm | Free, registration opens 24 hours ahead

Brooklyn kids’ singer Suzi Shelton brings her sing-along-and-dance set to the Park Slope Library auditorium — the makeup date for the June show that got rained out. Pitched at the birth-to-five crowd, so expect to be on your feet alongside them. One registration per family, and latecomers get a ten-minute grace period at the door.

Lego Robotics | DUMBO

Tuesday, August 25th | 3:30-4:30pm | Ages 8-12, registration required

Big kids team up with advanced LEGO robotics sets at the Adams Street Library, building and programming their way through an hour of STEM. Registration is required and the room is small, so sign up rather than turn up.

WEDNESDAY

Storytime in the Park | Fort Greene

Wednesdays in May-October | 11am

Sing, read, and play with librarians from Walt Whitman Library in Fort Greene Park! Have fun hearing great picture books read aloud and playing with other children during this program. For children of all ages and their caregivers. This program will be located at the bottom of the Monument stairs near Myrtle Playground and runs on Wednesdays at 11:ooam-11:45am from May 13th-October 14th.

Back-to-School Backpack Drive | Sunset Park

Wednesday, August 26th | 11am-2:30pm

Family Health Centers at NYU Langone hands out free backpacks and school supply kits to Sunset Park families at Martin Luther Playground, at Second Avenue and 55th Street. The resource fair alongside it has health screenings, information sessions, demonstrations, children’s entertainment and an activity area for grown-ups. Kits are first-come, first-served while supplies last, and NYC public schools go back on September 10th.

Prospect Park Stroller Walk | Prospect Park

Calling all parents and caregivers with children! Join a Prospect Park Alliance Naturalist for a leisurely stroll along Prospect Park’s waterways. Embrace the sound of streams and songs of birds, while enjoying fragrant flowers and the towering trees of Brooklyn’s Backyard. Please note that this walk leaves promptly at 10:00am the Prospect Park Boathouse.

Back-to-School Backpack Giveaway | Sheepshead Bay

Summer at the Terminal: AAPI Culture Day | Sunset Park

Back to School Bash at Atlantic Terminal Mall Plaza

Free crafts, games, block building and water fun this summer at Atlantic Terminal Mall Plaza on Saturdays from 11 am to 1 pm. The final installment is the Back to School Bash on Saturday, August 29 — bring a bathing suit and towel for the water play. RSVP here

Insect Exploration: Monarchs and More | Bergen Beach

Saturday, August 29th | 11am-12pm

Try your hand at catch‑and‑release with butterfly nets as you learn to spot different butterfly species, explore their body parts, and uncover how they grow and thrive. Then dive into the world of summer insects and pick up fun tips for finding these tiny park residents in your own neighborhood. This event will take place at Ecology Park.

Japan Village Brooklyn Summer Festival | Sunset Park

Japan Village’s annual Summer Fest is a free Japanese summer festival that brings together nearly 8,000 attendees for a day of food, games, and cultural performances. Held in their indoor-outdoor space, the event continues to grow each year with the support of generous sponsors.

Into the Woods Hike | Prospect Park 

Saturday, August 29th | 1-2:30pm 

Hone your naturalist skills by exploring Brooklyn’s oldest forest with the NYC Parks Urban Park Rangers. Learn all about our beloved native plant, animal and insect species that call these woods home.

Spike Lee’s BK Loves MJ Block Party | Fort Greene

Saturday, August 29th | 12-7pm

Spike Lee’s annual Michael Jackson birthday block party is back in Fort Greene Park for a free seven-hour outdoor party, with DJ Spinna on the decks all afternoon and Jordan Brand sponsoring this year’s edition. Lee has hosted it since 2009 and it draws a big dancing crowd, so the noon start is the easy end of the day with small children. Free and open to the public; the park entrance at DeKalb Avenue and Washington Park puts you closest.

SUNDAY

Brooklyn Crescents Lacrosse Clinic | Brooklyn Bridge Park 

Sunday, August 30th | 9-10am | Ages 3-8 and 9-14 (mixed genders) | Register here

Clinics focus on introducing players to basic lacrosse skills in a fun and supportive environment. Brooklyn Crescents’ goal is to give an overview of fundamental lacrosse skills – catching, throwing, cradling, ground balls. Sessions will include skill instruction and fun activities. Equipment will be provided. This event will take place at Pier 2.

Bring the family for a fun-filled Sunday afternoon, featuring programming by local, talented children’s performers and educators. They feature two events hosted by their partners, one at 12 pm, and one at 2pm. Stick around the whole slate of programming and head over to the Greenmarket (and the Fountain!) to make a whole day out of it.

  • 12-1pm: Bilingual (Spanish & English) sing-alongs with Lina Sings
  • 2-3pm: Puppet theater with Puppetsburg
