Free kid-friendly events this week in Brooklyn (9/9-9/15)

Fall is here, and this week is packed with free kid-friendly activities in our neighborhoods, including a big lineup of back-to-school block parties this weekend: Seaport Kids x Back to School Bash and the End of Summer Block Party on 5th Avenue in Bay Ridge on Saturday, and the Back to School Party at Montague Open Streets in Brooklyn Heights on Sunday! Other highlights of the week include the Brooklyn Americana Festival under the DUMBO Archway, Touch a Truck Day in Clinton Hill, and LEGO Robotics Leagues kicking off at Brooklyn Heights Library and coming soon to Adams Street Library. Domino Square, the newest addition to Williamsburg’s Domino Park, is now open to the public and celebrating with free music classes for kids and salsa dancing lessons for all!

Fall Into Step Dance Performance at Brooklyn Commons Park | Downtown Brooklyn

From ballet to contemporary styles, our Fall Into Step series showcases a diverse range of performances from talented dancers and choreographers. Each show will take you on a journey through the art form while captivating your senses and igniting your passion for movement. On 9/11, join for Portals: Doors to Black Past and Futures. This multidisciplinary dance work, presented by artist and choreographer, Kendra J.  Bostock, looks at everyday items in our lives that serve as portals to Black past, present and Afro-future. Bostock transports us across generations using her Sankofa process, inspired by the Ghanaian Akan term for “looking back to move forward.” Kendra J.  Bostock is a proud Detroit native working as a dancer, teaching artist, choreographer, arts administrator, facilitator, and community organizer in her current home, Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn.

Take advantage of free admission hours at the New York Aquarium in Coney Island, from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Wednesdays.   • Animal Encounter: Join Alliance Naturalists in learning more about the animals in the Audubon Center’s collection.
  • Tree ID Walk: Join us as we delve into the wonder of nature! Are you curious about why and when trees shed their leaves? Gain hands-on experience in citizen science as we explore the Prospect Park environment and witness how changing temperatures affect the trees. We will provide you with a guide to help you record your observations.

Visit Brooklyn Children’s Museum’s STEM Makerspace: Nature’s Engineers| Crown Heights

Brooklyn Children’s Museum has a new natural science-inspired makerspace, and you can visit it for FREE during Amazon Free Hours on Thursday afternoons! Nature’s Engineers is designed for children to learn from nature and engage in hands-on STEM activities, fostering creativity and critical thinking. This month’s project is making a fossil! Join in September to analyze fossils from BCM’s collection. Visitors will practice describing, measuring, and comparing attributes of objects to understand what Earth was like thousands of years ago. Then, visitors will create their own fossil cast inspired by BCM’s collection of fossils!

Sing, read, and play with librarians from Brooklyn Public Library! Have fun hearing great picture books read aloud and playing with other children during this program featuring guest musical artists from Urban Stages. For children of all ages and their caregivers. If you are in between the ages of 9 to 18, join us in the Teen Gaming Room from 4 to 5 PM for the Brooklyn Heights Lego Robotics League. This is in preparation for the FIRST LEGO LEAGUE competition at the Central Library. Do you love LEGOs, robotics and teamwork? Join the Adams Street Library team to compete in the annual Brooklyn Robotics League! Kids and teens (ages 9–17) will learn to use advanced LEGO robotics sets while exploring STEM concepts and making new friends. In partnership with NYC First, we will be hosting workshops leading up to the big competition in 2025 at Central Library. Registration to join the Adams Street Library team will close on Saturday, September 14. Community Science Fishing | Brooklyn Bridge Park

Friday, September 13 | 4-6pm 

Learn the basics of catch-and-release line fishing from the Brooklyn Bridge Conservancy’s own expert anglers. During this clinic, participants of all ages will learn how to tie knots, bait a hook, drop a line, and (with some luck) reel up a fish! Contribute to the Conservancy’s community science efforts as we collect data from our catch to assess the health of the East River. No experience or supplies needed – equipment is provided but please note only a limited rods are available to loan and will be handed out on a first come, first served basis. All ages are welcome at this free event!

HealthJox health & sports program will start with 30-minutes of “self-discovery” with our mental health coach. The next 30-minutes will be dedicated to stretching and workout with our trainer. The next hour, the kids will start with basketball clinics and AirOdart Clinics with our coaches, each separated by age group: 12/13; 14/15; 16/17. During the final hour, we will have our Youth apply the skills that they’ve just learned during the official basketball games simultaneously. We will have fruit, water and healthy snacks for the kids as well as uniforms. This health & sports program will be help every Saturday until Saturday, September 28th.

The 43rd Annual Great Irish Fair of New York | Prospect Park

Celebrate the halfway point to St. Patrick’s Day on September 14 at the 43rd Annual Great Irish Fair of New York. Taking place at Holy Name of Jesus Parish in Prospect Park, the fair hosts musicians, dancers and all things Irish, including a presentation on the Good Friday Agreement and its lasting impact on the Northern Ireland peace process. Leo’s dad is voting in his first election as a naturalized US citizen, and he promises to take Leo to the polls with him. Leo can’t wait! But, after his cousin Ray casts doubt on the importance of a single vote, it’ll take Leo’s class mock election results, as well as a talk with his dad to convince him that each and every vote matters. This lively picture book shows us how citizens decide who will be in charge, hitting key moments in an election, from voter registration to polling places, to staying in line, and features extensive backmatter for kids who want to dig deeper. Isabel Roxas is an author & illustrator creating books for young readers. Originally from Manila, she is now based in New York City, completing the third installment of her award-winning graphic novel series The Adventures of Team Pom.

The Six Foot Platform on Car-Free Washington Street | DUMBO

The Six Foot Platform, an experimental art & performance program presenting work by Brooklyn-based artists on a 6×6 platform, is returning this fall to the intersection of Washington and Water Streets. This weekend, come discover what the Universe is telling you! “Bark Tarot” is an audience-participatory installation. You are invited to approach Eiko Nishida’s sculptural tree, ask of it a question, and then choose a piece of bark to discover the answer. Each piece of bark holds a phrase snipped from a newspaper, in a myriad of languages.

End of Summer Block Party on Car-Free 5th Avenue | Bay Ridge

A Morning at the Merry-Go-Round with PJ Library | Prospect Park Carousel

PJ Library, the organization that sends free Jewish storybooks to children around the world every month, welcomes kids and their families to a morning of fun at Brooklyn’s Prospect Park Carousel, followed by story time & lively music by Tkiya. The historic 1912 Prospect Park Carousel, located in the Children’s Corner, is one of the Park’s most popular attractions.  It features 53 magnificent hand-carved horses, dragon-pulled chariots, alongside a lion, deer & giraffe.  The event is recommended for children ages 2-8, and siblings are always welcome.

Latino Conservation Week: Bilingual Birding | Brooklyn Bridge Park

To kick off Latino Conservation Week (September 14-22), join NYC Bird Alliance (formerly NYC Audubon) and the Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy for birding in English and Spanish! Come and explore the woodlands and meadows, and enjoy views of the city and the waterbirds on the East River. The group will meet at the park entrance near Pier 1, located at 2 Furman Street. Registration not required but encouraged. No limit. Free.

On September 15, come sing, dance, clap, stomp, jump and rock out with Ari The Sing-along Guy! Ari, his guitar and his trusty yellow sweatband will lead you in songs you know, and some you don’t, but all of them are fun, interactive, and they really rock!

Perfect for fans of New Kid and A First Time for Everything, Uprooted is a joyful and tearful debut middle grade graphic memoir about one girl being uprooted when she moves to Hong Kong, a place where her family fits in but, for her, it’s nothing like home. Ruth Chan is an illustrator and author who spent her childhood tobogganing in Canada, her teens in Hong Kong and China, a number of years studying art and education, and a decade working with youth and families in underserved communities. She now writes and illustrates children’s books and comics in Brooklyn and remains a proud Canadian. Join for this in-person with Ruth in conversation with Wes Chan.

Join Brooklyn Bridge Parents x Mommy Poppins for their bigger than ever annual Back to School Party by powered by Community Offshore Wind during Montague Open Streets with 40 free kids activities, performances and more. There will be games, arts & crafts, soccer, bubble shows (2-3pm), face painting, kids fitness classes, obstacle course, DJ and much more. Live performances will include a kids concert by Hopalong Andrew (12:30-1:15pm) and a dance party by Hype Dance (3-3:30pm). The Walt Whitman Initiative’s annual “Song of Myself” Marathon is an open public reading of Walt Whitman’s celebrated poem. Readers volunteer to recite the 52 sections of “Song of Myself”, often personalizing their reading with an interpretation through song, dance, translation into different languages, musical accompaniment, or other original means. If interested, register here! The 52 sections are performed sequentially without an intermission. Audience attendees are invited to sit on the Granite Prospect steps facing readers, while enjoying views of Manhattan Bridge, the Brooklyn Bridge and East River. The podium has a microphone that is connected to two speakers to amplify the recitations. A limited number of chairs will be available for those for whom sitting on the steps is difficult or uncomfortable.
