On Monday, October 6, and Tuesday, October 7, skywatchers are treated to the largest and brightest supermoon of 2025, known as the Harvest Supermoon in New York City. This rare lunar event appears up to 14% larger and 30% brighter than usual, turning the moon into a golden giant rising above the cityscape.
The Full Harvest Supermoon rises at 6:08 pm, peaks at 11:47 p.m. EDT on Monday, October 6, but New Yorkers will get the best view at moonrise on Tuesday, October 7 at 6:36 pm, when it climbs dramatically above the eastern horizon just after sunset.
For the most dramatic view, look to the eastern horizon right after sunset. The moon’s low position will cause it to glow with a beautiful golden-orange hue as it appears through a thicker layer of Earth’s atmosphere. It will also appear particularly massive on the horizon due to the “moon illusion”.
