Macy’s Brooklyn stores closing, Lidl discount grocery chain opening

Macy’s confirmed the closure of 66 Macy’s stores including both locations in Brooklyn which are expected to close in Q1, 2025. There will be going-out-of-business sales at the Downtown Brooklyn and Sheepshead Bay locations starting soon. In the future, there is the possibility of family-friendly attractions coming to 422 Fulton Street in Downtown Brooklyn, the longtime site of Macy’s. The four-story, 440,000 square-foot building was recently sold. The buyers say the space could be transformed in the future for family-friendly uses, including retail or entertainment from mega companies like Netflix, Universal, and Lego.

Lidl US similar to Trader Joe’s but with a much wider assortment of brands and products is opening its newest food market on Wednesday, January 29 at the Gateway Center in East New York. The German retailer has also signed a long-term lease for a site at 490 Fulton Street in Downtown Brooklyn, with an opening date slated for 2025. “Lidl is one of the largest international grocers that operates more than 12,000 stores and is located in 31 countries, employing more than 341,000 employees globally. Lidl US offers customers the highest quality fresh produce, meat, bakery items and a wide array of household products at unbelievably low prices.”
