New un-zoned public elementary school opening in Downtown Brooklyn in September 24

Breaking news! A brand new borough-wide public elementary school focusing on project-based learning and Spanish English dual language education is coming to Downtown Brooklyn next school year! Located at the new mixed-use development at 489 State Street, PS 456 is currently enrolling students for Pre-K and Kindergarten. They will grow grade by grade up to 5th Grade.

What we know so far:

  • Borough-wide admissions from all Brooklyn school districts including District 13 and 15
  • Admissions priority for low income families with 50% of seats set aside
  • Spanish dual language program available starting in Kindergarten
  • Inclusive environment with integrated classrooms each grade
  • Brand new school building with elevated outdoor play space, arts room, gym, auditorium and music room
  • School capacity is 500 students and the Department of Education plans to open with at least 1 Pre-K class and 3 Kindergarten classes (one of the Spanish dual language)
  • The school building is physically located in District 15, which matters for middle school admissions later on
  • Project-based learning model with a focus on social justice
  • Close collaboration with Brooklyn New School in Carroll Gardens
