On Wednesday, a 15-year-old boy was shot at McLaughlin Park by Tillary and Jay Street and passed away a few hours later. The child, a student at Brooklyn Laboratory Charter School in DUMBO Heights, was approached by two boys, one of whom shot him after a fist fight, according to the police. Our council member Lincoln Restler visited Brooklyn Lab at dismissal on Thursday to check in with students and teachers. It was heartbreaking for him to hear from the principal who performed CPR, the young people who lost a friend, and a school community that no longer felt safe in our neighborhood park. The boy was shot on Wednesday after school had let out. McLaughlin Park is a space where students come and spend time together before, during and after the school day. There are nearly 10 different high schools in the immediate vicinity of McLaughlin Park alone.
