Top 10 family events in February in Brooklyn

Go-to Brooklyn parent resources Macaroni KID Brooklyn NW and Brooklyn Bridge Parents have teamed up to bring you some of the best family events for Brooklyn families in February including Lunar New Year celebrations, a circus, the opening of a new food museum, ice sculpture show and a film festival for kids:

Governors Island Ice Sculpture Show

Saturday, February 3, 2024 | 12 to 5 pm | Free

Governors Island’s third annual Ice Sculpture Show will take place on Saturday, February 3 from 12 to 5 p.m. This year’s Ice Sculp­ture Show will also fea­ture food trucks, ice carv­ing demos, live sets DJs and more win­ter fun. Ice carving will take place from 12 to 2 pm. Find out more here.

Lunar New Year Celebration at City Point and Albee Square

Saturday, February 3, 2024 | 11 am to 4 pm | Free

Celebrate Chinese New Year at City Point with traditional Lion Dances, Balloontopia Dragon Edition, Kids Lunar New Year-inspired crafts, and family portraits. Free and fun for all ages on Saturday, February 3, 11 am to 4 pm. Best for ages 2 to 12. Free RSVP here.

Balloontopia Dragon Edition / 11 am to 4 pm: Experience life-size red balloon creatures: dragons, fish, and fu. Plus, the popular Balloon Hut for kids to play inside! The event is on the Main Floor / next door to Rumi.

Lunar New Year Family Portraits / 11 am to 4 pm: Free family portraits in front of a red balloon dragon background. Space is limited on a first come / first served basis. Liz Green Photography captures timeless memories to illustrate your BEST self — no matter what chapter of life.

Lunar New Year Crafts / 11 am to 2 pm: Create dragons and drums with crafts provided. Best for kids ages 3 – 10 years old. DeKalb Market Hall next to Han Dynasty restaurant.

Lion Dances with Downtown Brooklyn Partnership: Tradition! Tradition! Discover Chow Lay Fut and his dynamic team of lion dancers. Performances: 1:00 pm, 1:30 pm at City Point, 2:10, 2:40, and 3:20 pm at Albee Square, 3:40 pm, and 4:10 pm at DeKalb Market Hall.

BAM Kids Film Festival

Saturday 2/3 & Sunday 2/4 | $10 – $14 per person

Courage and creativity collide at this family-friendly event featuring some of this year’s best short films for kids from around the world! With work by over 50 filmmakers, one of Brooklyn’s favorite BAMkids traditions returns for the 26th year with the latest and greatest animated, live action, and documentary gems. Let kids’ imaginations run wild as heroes of every kind boldly forge their own path in these outrageously fun and inspiring tales. Best for ages 3 to 8. Find out more here.

CAMPTOPIA – Brooklyn’s biggest summer camp fair

Sunday, February 4, 2024 | 11 am to 3 pm | Free

Mommy Poppins and Brooklyn Bridge Parents have partnered up to host CAMPTOPIA, NYC’s biggest summer camp fair ever with 30+free kids activities! Unlike traditional camp fairs, this event provides an opportunity for families to experience camps in person. We will have 30+ free kids activities for all ages including bouncy house, ping pong, STEM fun, games, face painting, DJ, crafts, photo booth, weaving, dance lessons, freebies and more. Free magic shows best for ages 3 years and up will take place at 12.30 and 2 pm. Plus, lots of information and early bird specials for summer camps ’24. The camp fair will take place at Atlantic Terminal Mall on the ground floor next to Party City at 625 Atlantic Ave (opposite Barclay’s Center), a shopping destination and main transit hub located at the junction of popular Downtown Brooklyn/Prospect Heights/Fort Greene neighborhoods.  Celebrate Black History Month

  • Movie Night: The Wiz at Brooklyn Conservatory of Music in Park Slope
    Friday, February 9 | 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm | $15
    Join BKCM in celebrating Black History Month through one of the most iconic, musical movies of all time! They’ll be showing The Wiz in their Concert Hall with all of your favorite cinematic accoutrements – each ticket comes with popcorn and a drink. Seating available but feel free to bring your own picnic blankets to cozy up. In true BKCM style, the movie will have subtitles displayed and they’ll be encouraging everyone to sing along!
  • Free movie screening of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse with Rooftop Films at Atlantic Terminal Mall
    Saturday, February 17th | 12 pm to 3:30 pm | FREE                                                                                                                            Join Atlantic Terminal as they honor Black History Month with a free movie screening of Spider-Verse with Rooftop Films on the lower level (near DSW) at Atlantic Terminal Mall. Brooklyn Book Bodega will host a special book giveaway with themes surrounding Black History Month.
  • Black Future Festival at Brooklyn Children’s Museum in Crown Heights
    Sunday, February 18 – Sunday, February 25 | 10 am to 5 pm | $15 museum admission
    Join Brooklyn Children’s Museum for a week of reflection and future-forward fun inspired by the national celebration of the African Diaspora and Black History Month. Guest curator, Kendra J. Bostock and STooPS, present workshops, dance performances, storytelling, and more.
  • Jack and Friends Black History Month Series: Lavender Blues Performance at Park Slope Library
    Wednesday, February 21 and 28 | 4 pm to 4:45 pm | FREE with registration
    Join Brooklyn Public Library for their Jack and Friends program celebrating Black History Month series with Lavender Blues! Their high energy performance for babies and toddlers includes songs from their REMIXED to a new cadence and bonus beat! Think Baby Hip Hop! Sing, dance and play with Lavender Blues at BPL!
  • Brooklyn Museum Teen Night: Lights, Cameras, Crooklyn! Kick off February with 2024’s first Teen Night, a teen-led program centered on art and activism! Inspired by Spike Lee: Creative Sources, this evening will feature art-making, performances, and much more. Free; registration is required. Open to ages 14–19. Drop-In Workshops for Artland Installation at Brooklyn Museum

Saturdays, February 10, 17, 24  | 1–3 pm | $20 museum admission, free for kids 0-19

Take a trip to Artland: An Installation by Do Ho Suh and Children, an enchanting ecosystem of color and clay which opened January 27, and discover how to create your own world. In these free, all-ages drop-in workshops, you’ll draw inspiration from the real world to imagine a new one. Artland is a fantastical ecosystem dreamed up in 2016 by artist Do Ho Suh (born Seoul, South Korea, 1962) and his two young daughters. This ever-growing and evolving series of islands is inhabited by characters and landscapes sculpted from nontoxic clay.

Celebrate Lunar New Year at the Brooklyn’s Children Museum

Join Brooklyn Children’s Museum as we usher in the Year of the Dragon! Learn about the traditions of Lunar New Year through storytelling with authors Michele Wong McSween and Yobe Qiu; live music, dance, and Kung Fu workshops with the New York Chinese Cultural Center; calligraphy workshops with artist Nelson Leung, and a rooftop lion dance parade led by the Chinatown Community Young Lions.

Season opening: Bindlestiff Family Cirkus Open Stage Variety Show in Downtown Brooklyn

Museum of Food and Drink opening in DUMBO
