Two Downtown Brooklyn Charter Schools merging

The merger of Brooklyn Prospect Charter School (BPCS) and International Charter School of New York (ICS) has been approved, ICS will become part of Prospect Schools legally on July 1, 2021. International Charter School of New York is a Kindergarten to 5th Grade Charter School with currently two locations in Downtown Brooklyn. The District 13 Charter School will move into the building of BPCS’s District 13 elementary school at 80 Willoughby Street in September. This means ICS grades K-5 will all be under one roof starting this fall. Brooklyn Prospect Charter School has various campuses from elementary school to high school in Brooklyn’s Districts 13 and 15.

ICS will remain a cohesive and distinct school in the Prospect network; they are not combining their classes with Prospect’s Downtown Elementary school and don’t plan to share teachers. Both schools plan to keep 2 classes with around 27 students per grade. However, the schools plan to align the curriculum. Brooklyn Prospect will also make renovations: all windows will be upgraded; electrical systems improvements will be made throughout the building; and, finally, they will strengthen  the roof to allow for an extension of the stairs and elevator with the goal of ultimately adding a playground. Currently the school building has no outdoor space.

Lotteries for both schools will stay independent. Apply to ICS here and BPCS here until April 1st, 2021. Once the merger is finalized, 5th grade students at ICS will have seats at their Clinton Hill Middle School. They can continue onto Brooklyn Prospect High School if they choose.
