Gov­er­nors Island Arts presents the fourth annu­al Gov­er­nors Island Ice Sculp­ture Show! Ten artists will be paired with a pro­fes­sion­al ice carv­er from Okamo­to Stu­dio dur­ing the free pub­lic event, where vis­i­tors are invit­ed to wit­ness this real-time ice carv­ing from 12 to 2pm and enjoy an awards cer­e­mo­ny and ice sculp­ture instal­la­tion from 2 to 3pm — includ­ing the audi­ence-vot­ed​“People’s Choice” award. The event will include ice carv­ing work­shops, crafts, food trucks, and live music from dis­­­co-infused Afro­fu­tur­ist funk duo The Illus­tri­ous Blacks, and a spe­cial per­for­mance by NYC-based all-women, trans, and non-bina­ry drum­line Fogo Azul. 2. Ring in the Lunar New Year at Central Library

Usher in the Lunar New Year with a performance by classical pianist, children’s music artist, and Grammy U mentor Vivian Fang Liu. Audiences can anticipate an enchanting celebration, as Vivian Fang Liu weaves a tapestry of joy and cultural exploration through her musical prowess and each participant will receive a red paper lantern.

  • LA Blacksmith and Jazz Plus Presents: The Influence of Black Music on American History at Red Hook Recreation Center

    LA Blacksmith and Jazz Plus are dynamic, charismatic performers that play a special brand of electrifying Funk, Jazz & Soul. Come to the Rec Center to celebrate Black American history and culture with them. The show is free and open to all ages.

    Learn about the history of Western Africa and the Diaspora through the story woven intricately into fabrics. Find your creative resistance by learning about the history art of Adire Eleko, a wax resist dying technique practiced by the Egba People of Yorubaland (Nigeria, Benin and Togo). There will be a tour of the Wyckoff House at 12pm, and the craft will begin at 1pm.

This unique spin on the traditional “sip and paint” invites our community to contribute to a collective artwork, which will be unveiled at the end of the event.     Brooklyn Conservatory of Music is hosting a Family Singalong + Celebration for Black History Month. The sing-along will allow children to explore the influence of prominent Black musicians and civil rights leaders in American history through song, dance and video, highlighting the way Black artists have taken popular stories, songs, and even classroom concepts and creatively reimagined them.

    Join Musician Kevin Nathaniel for African Instruments Workshop and Performance. Nathaniel will perform contemporary songs from Africa and the African Diaspora and introduce participants to the mbira, shekere, and other African instruments. All ages welcome.

4. Get creative at Ti Atis (Little Artists) at Brooklyn Children’s Museum

Haiti Cultural Exchange returns to the Brooklyn Children’s Museum for a new season of interactive youth and family programming! Learn about diverse art forms and celebrate Haitian culture through activities and performances facilitated by Haitian artists. This February, Jaden Timoun returns to host a Krik? Krak! Haitian Creole storytelling session in the spirit of the oral storytelling tradition that is popular in Haitian culture. This session will be accompanied by song, movement, and an arts/crafts activity.

5. Celebrate Tu BiShvat at Brooklyn Children’s Museum

Join the Brooklyn Children’s Museum and The Neighborhood: An Urban Center for Jewish Life to celebrate Tu BiShvat, the Jewish new year of trees! Learn about the history and traditions of the holiday with live music and movement performances, interactive planting workshops, and storytelling that highlights nature. There will also be an interactive fruit tasting of symbolic fruits, short films celebrating trees, a tree-inspired cyanotype printmaking workshop, and a workshop with real worms and compost!

6. Watch the big game at a Super Bowl watch party

The Kansas City Chiefs face off with the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, February 9, and there are so many neighborhood spots to watch the big game! Kick off is at 6:30pm, but many venues are hosting pre-game parties earlier in the day.

  • Randolph Beer | DUMBO
    Randolph Beer will be showing the game on big TVs with the sound on! Book a table here for parties of 2-5. Families are welcome on Sundays, with plenty of arcade games to keep the kids busy! The party will kick off at 5pm. There will be beer and wing specials and football squares!

8. Catch a performance during the New York Sword Dance Festival

Sword dancing is a winter celebration that has come down through the ages from the coal-mining regions of northern England. Presented by the NYC team Half Moon Sword, this annual festival is now in its 39th year, and will feature 10 nationwide troupes. The festival will feature both mystical, stately long sword and lively rapper sword dancing, accompanied by live music. Performance locations will include the Brooklyn Heights Library, Pacific Library, Park Slope Library, Brooklyn Conservatory of Music, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Brooklyn Waldorf School, and Old First Reformed Church.
