Upcoming service projects for ages 8+ in Brooklyn

The Service Collective is a new non-profit supported by the Fund for the City of New York and they partner with local non-profits to set up and facilitate service projects for a variety of ages, schedules and interests. Upcoming service projects for ages 8+ in Brooklyn:

10/27: Flower arranging for Brooklyn Hospital (Age 8+): Help recycle event flowers into gorgeous bouquets to brighten someone’s day! This event is $10 to help cover costs of refrigeration and transportation of the flowers + floral arranging teachers. Partner: Bloom Again Brooklyn

10/27: JUST ADDED! Letter Writing to Incarcerated People (Age 15+):  Please join North Brooklyn Mutual Aid, BPL’s Justice Initiatives, and the Greenpoint Library to connect with incarcerated individuals through letter writing. All letter writing materials will be provided along with guidelines on how to be a supportive correspondent and how to navigate Department of Corrections mailing restrictions. Partners: North Brooklyn Mutual Aid, Black and Pink

10/29: Plant Tulips in Cadman Plaza Park (all ages with guardian): This is a hit for the whole family! We love watching the blooms pop up come Spring. Come out! Partner: Cadman Plaza Conservancy

11/1: Candy Donation Stand for Food Pantry and Community Center (Age 8+):  Help run our candy donation site! We need promoters, table workers, sorters, treat bag fillers, donation deliverers and much more! We will be packaging the candy for donation to the Vinegar Hill Food Pantries for use in their community center.

11/7: Assemble Comfort Packs for newly arrived Asylum Seekers (Age 8+): Help package comfort kits for community members currently experiencing difficulty obtaining personal hygiene items. We will also create cards to be included. Items will include basic toiletry, non-perishable snacks, and warm socks. Partner: CHiPS Soup Kitchen & Women’s Shelter

11/12: Book Sorting at Brooklyn Book Bodega (Age 14+): Brooklyn Book Bodega’s mission is to increase the number of 100+ book homes in Brooklyn. Research shows that households with 100+ books boost life outcomes for children and adolescents. Sign up to join the Book Bodega staff to help sort and stamp books and prepare and package them for events.

11/17: Fill the Fridge (Age 8+): Meet your friends and neighbors to help prep easy meals, package them, and deliver them to the Brooklyn Heights Community Fridge. Keeping the fridge clean and stocked with easy, healthy meals helps ensure all our neighbors get enough nutritious food to eat. In partnership with Downtown Friendly.

11/20: Design Thanksgiving Meal Delivery Bags and Cards for Homebound Seniors (All Ages): Warm the heart of a homebound senior! Swing by and decorate a Thanksgiving meal delivery bag and a card to wish your neighbors well. Partner: Heights & Hills

12/3: Help Breakdown Adventure Playground (Age 13+):  play:groundNYC operates New York City’s only adventure playground – The Yard – on Governor’s Island. They need help breaking down large play structures and sorting materials to get the space ready for winter. The Yard is looking for volunteers with a variety of skills. Teens that can lift 40+ lbs and like/are willing to learn how to use tools and other building equipment are a plus. Partner: play:groundNYC
