Ways to volunteer as a family this Thanksgiving season in Brooklyn

As Thanksgiving approaches, there are many ways for Brooklyn families to give back locally in November whether it is baking a pie or cooking a Thanksgiving meal for somebody in need or donating a turkey.

Share a Potluck Dinner with Local Refugee Families

Wednesday, November 15 | 6-8pm | Brooklyn Heights

Bring the whole family and share a meal with local refugees as part of New Neighbors Partnership. Bring a dish that is special to you (or just something to share). It’s a great way to meet new people, learn about different perspectives, and try some new, delicious food! Sign up here.

Care for Our Street Trees

Saturday, November 18 | 10am-12pm | Brooklyn Heights

Council Member Lincoln Restler’s Office, together with Big Reuse and the Brooklyn Heights Association, are hosting an event to care for our streets’ trees. Join fellow neighbors for a few hours of cleaning, weeding, and mulching. Sign up here.

Create Art for Thanksgiving Meal Delivery Bags

Sunday, November 19 | 3-5pm | Brooklyn Heights

Join friends and neighbors of all ages to help with this inspiring community art project. The Service Collective will decorate 250+ meal delivery bags that will be packed by Heights and Hills volunteers on Thanksgiving Day and delivered to local homebound seniors. Sign up here.

Cook a Thanksgiving Dish

Drop-off November 20, 21 & 22 | 9am-2pm | Park Slope

CHiPS Soup Kitchen & Women’s Shelter is hosting a special Thanksgiving feast, and will be accepting donated dishes. Food may be homemade or store-bought and dropped off the Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday before Thanksgiving. Sign up here to contribute!

Bake a Pie

Drop-off Wednesday, November 22 | 12-4pm | Brooklyn Heights

Heights and Hills will be delivering Thanksgiving meals to Brooklyn’s homebound seniors, and are looking for holiday pies! Pies can be homemade or store-bought and dropped off at Grace Church. Click here to sign up.

Stock a Community Food Pantry

Friday evenings | 5:30-7pm | Downtown Brooklyn

Every Friday evening at Next Step Community Church, volunteers stock grocery shelves to prepare for families to shop at the food pantry on Saturdays. Children accompanied by an adult are welcome! Sign up here.

Deliver Thanksgiving Meals

Thursday, November 23 | 9:30am | Industry City

For families with a car, God’s Love We Deliver is also looking for volunteers to deliver meals on Thanksgiving Day. Volunteers will meet at the Meal Distribution Center in Industry City and deliver to 6-8 households. Sign up here!

Make Holiday Cards

Donate your time without leaving home! God’s Love We Deliver is accepting Thanksgiving and winter holiday cards that will be delivered to their clients alongside meals. Get the whole family involved in crafting cards, then mail them in to God’s Love We Deliver! More information and instructions here.

Donate a Turkey

The Fort Greene & Farragut Fresh Pantry is hosting their annual turkey drive to provide Thanksgiving meals to 1,200 families from Farragut, Whitman, Ingersoll, and Atlantic Terminal Houses. Click here to donate! And, if you’re interested in volunteering at the food pantry beyond the Thanksgiving season, sign up here.
