Where to celebrate Juneteenth in Brooklyn

Juneteenth, also know as our country’s second Independence Day, is celebrated on June 19th to commemorate the end of slavery in the United States. Gather with family and friends to attend an event in Fort Greene, Brooklyn Heights, Crown Heights, Prospect Park, Brownsville, Sunset Park, Bed-Stuy, DUMBO, East New York, Sheepshead Bay, and more.

Juneteenth Party with Brown Babies n’ Books! at Greenlight Bookstore

Greenlight’s annual Juneteenth event, highlighting Black creatives and topics that directly impact Black livelihood, is back for its fourth year! This year, they are hosting their first kids-focused event, celebrating the work of several Black children’s book authors and illustrators with a family-friendly evening of reading, arts and crafts, food and fun! Award-winning author and poet Zetta Elliot headlines with a Story Time of her new book A Song for Juneteenth, an emotional and lyrical picture book that celebrates the importance of Juneteenth as well as the resilience of Black families and the power of community. Following the reading, award-winning artist Jonell Joshua leads an interactive arts and crafts activity for kids and adults to enjoy! Free drinks and refreshments from Black-owned Brooklyn businesses Jaylee’s Treats and Happy Cork are served, and a portion of proceeds from all purchases on June 12 will be donated to Brown Babies n’ Books, a Brooklyn-based, community-driven literacy nonprofit dedicated to building legacy through literacy, representation, and community.

Teen Time: Juneteenth Celebration with Zakiya N. Jamal at the Brooklyn Heights Library

Join Prospect Park Alliance and Alfreda’s Black Earth for our 2nd annual Juneteenth gathering honoring Black life, land and liberation through film and sound. The celebration begins with a set by DJ Tara from 4:00pm-8:00pm, setting the tone for an outdoor celebration grounded in community and reflection. Following, filmmaker Arielle Knight will join for a pre-show Q&A. At 8:30 pm, the evening will transition to the film program exploring Black relationships to nature, care and self-determination.

Juneteenth Food Festival at the Weeksville Heritage Center

Come to this gathering that’s part cookout, part block party! Join Black-Owned Brooklyn and Weeksville Heritage Center for their 5th Annual Juneteenth Food Festival, a daylong celebration bringing together 31 Black pop-ups, restaurants and food trucks. Food has been central to Juneteenth since its earliest celebrations in Texas. The Juneteenth Food Festival carries these traditions into a distinctly Brooklyn context: African American, Caribbean, African and Latin American foodways converge — from Southern fried catfish, barbecue ribs and red velvet cake to Nigerian suya, Haitian patties and Puerto Rican vegan pernil — reflecting the borough’s rich Black diaspora.

Juneteenth: Brooklyn and the Abolitionist Movement in Brooklyn Bridge Park

Join the Urban Park Rangers to learn about the Abolitionist movement in Brooklyn and the Brooklynites that fought against slavery. Join us on Juneteenth for our annual celebration of Black freedom and creativity. Our program is a family affair in the most literal sense. Infinity Song and Victory Boyd are siblings, the Boyd family, sharing a stage and a sound rooted in the same household. Annie and the Caldwells, a Mississippi family band led by matriarch Ms. Annie Caldwell, completes a bill where family is not just a theme. It is the lineup. For our d/Deaf and hard of hearing communities, we will have an ASL interpreter on stage.

Build a Brownstone on Juneteenth at Artshack Brooklyn

Join Artshack X Celebrate Bed Stuy to “Build a Brownstone” facade out of clay for Juneteenth! This class is free to the community.  Participants must register online to reserve a spot. Before the hands-on workshop begins, a teaching artist from Celebrate Bed-Stuy will provide a historical foundation on the significance of Juneteenth and the legacy of the brownstones in Bed-Stuy. By highlighting three historic neighborhood brownstones, participants will learn about there architectural style and cultural importance grounding the “Build a Brownstone” experience. Afterwards, participants will build thier own brownstone facade out of clay with the guidance of Artshack teaching artists.  Pickup your piece 2-3 weeks after the class.

Juneteenth 5K in Brooklyn Bridge Park

Brooklyn Bridge Park, in partnership with TeamWRK, will host a Juneteenth 5K. This Juneteenth 5K run/walk welcomes participants of all ages and abilities, celebrating freedom, culture, and unity through movement along the waterfront.
