New amenities for families in our neighborhoods September ’24

New amenities for families have recently opened or are coming soon to our neighborhoods in Brooklyn. Our overview includes a new art studio in Prospect Heights, two ballet studios arriving in DUMBO, outdoor pickleball in Downtown Brooklyn, a math learning center in Park Slope, plus more openings on the horizon: the expansion of Space Club in Greenpoint, Asase Yaa’s new facilities for African dance and drum programs, birthday parties returning to Prospect Park Zoo after a long hiatus, and an ice skating rink returning to Brooklyn Bridge Park this winter.

Brand New Turf at P.S. 261 | Boerum Hill | NOW OPEN 

Thanks to Lincoln Restler, the School Construction Authority and the DOE Division of School Facilities, the turf at PS 261 in Boerum Hill was replaced in time for the beginning of the school year! The new field is being used by PS 261 students during recess, and all Boerum Hill families are welcome to enjoy this neighborhood playground after school and on weekends.

Sensory-Safe Skating at 4Play Skate Lounge | Industry City | NOW OPEN

This new skating lounge in Industry City offers Sensory-Safe Skating from 12 to 3pm daily, creating an inclusive space for neurodivergent skaters. During these sessions, there is reduced lighting, lower music volume, and other sensory-friendly amenities such as headphones for those with sound sensitivities. Adults and children are both $10/person; book your session here! 4Play also offers Family Skate for $20/adult and $10/child.

Little Makers Art Studio | Prospect Heights | NOW OPEN

Little Makers Art Studio is now open at 255 Flatbush Avenue! This new art school offers After-School Programs, Workshops, and Art Play Sessions for kids aged 2-12. Programs are grouped by age range: Mini Makers (18 months–3 years), Little Makers (4–8 years), and Studio Makers (9–12 years). They also host School Holiday Mini Camps and Birthday Parties. CityPickle at Atlantic Terminal | Downtown Brooklyn | NOW OPEN through November 3

CityPickle has officially opened pop-up pickleball courts at Atlantic Terminal! From September 12th through November 3rd, you can enjoy pickleball on two dedicated courts located on Atlantic Terminal’s exterior plaza at 139 Flatbush Avenue. The courts are open daily from 8am to 7pm. To book a session, click here. Reservations are $60/hour at off-peak times, and $80/hour during peak hours.

Science Party Animals | Birthday parties at Brooklyn Preschool of Science in Cobble Hill | Booking Now

Science Party Animals is now offering birthday parties for ages 3-6 located at the Brooklyn Preschool of Science in Cobble Hill! During these 2-hour parties, children will learn about, touch, and hold different animals. After that, guests will do science experiments. There will also be time for food and cake. Parties can accommodate up to 25 kids. The costs are $750 for 1-15 Children and $900 for 16-25 Children.

Renovated tennis courts at De Hostos Playground | South Williamsburg | NOW OPEN 

The De Hostos Playground, which is adjacent to South Williamsburg’s I.S. 318 Eugenio Maria De Hostos Middle School, completed a major renovation, including new tennis courts. The renovation was a joint effort between the Kings County Tennis League, the USTA Foundation, Emirates Airlines, and Councilmember Lincoln Restler. The revamped space will be utilized to both I.S. 318 students and local Williamsburg families.

Mathnasium | New Location in Park Slope | Grand Re-Opening September 21 & 22

Mathnasium is a math-only learning center for students K-12. After conducting an assessment to determine how a student is performing based on national standards, a learning plan is assembled to address his/her specific needs. This is a very unique program for students that makes learning math fun and effective. They also offer homework help, SHSAT prep and Regents prep. They are opening a new location this September at 200 7th Avenue in Park Slope, not far from P.S. 321. The community is invited to a two-day Grand Re-Opening event on Friday, September 20 & Saturday, September 21 from 2-6pm, with face painting, ballon animals, games, prizes & more. They are also offering free Math Assessments, which are a great way for parents to, without obligation, identify gaps in their child’s math literacy and determine whether or not he or she is performing at grade level. Mathnasium charges a flat enrollment fee, and students attend 2-3 times per week. Contact the center directly for more details on pricing.

Ballerinna Pre-Ballet and Ballet Group Lessons | DUMBO | Opening September 24 

Learn coordination, musicality and early ballet technique (Vaganova method) while studying in a fun and friendly environment. Curriculum created by Inna Yureneva a Bolshoi Ballet Academy graduate, soloist of the numerous dance companies and former artistic director of the Bolshoi Ballet Academy Summer Intensive in Connecticut. Classes are held at the beautiful, spacious studio in Dumbo, Brooklyn and in close proximity to the picturesque Brooklyn Bridge Promenade and the subway (York street F line and High Street A/C lines). Asase Yaa School of the Arts | New dance and music facility in Bed Stuy | Opening October 4

The Asase Yaa School of the Arts provides dance and drum instruction to children ages 3 to 18. Students study various dance forms including jazz, ballet, hip hop, modern, and African, and the year-long program (October through June) ends with a public recital. The organization will begin its 2024-25 season in a new community arts space in Bed Stuy. The center will have three dance studios, a music room, a community lounge, and office space.

Tutu School | New location in DUMBO | Opening Fall 2024

The children’s dance studio Tutu School is slated to open a new location in DUMBO this fall, in the space where City Chemist on Jay Street was located. Tutu School offers classes, camps, and birthday parties for toddlers and kids ages 18 months up to 8 years old. Tutu School already has locations in Boerum Hill and Park Slope. Golf V2 | New location in Brooklyn Heights | Opening TBA

Golf V2, which already has a Junior Academy for ages 5-12+ at 130 Clinton Street in Brooklyn Heights, will be opening a new facility at 116 Montague Street, in the space formerly occupied Mattress Firm. The Montague Street location offers year-round golf training with simulators Annual membership at Golf v.2 includes 120 hours on the simulators, which can be used at the member’s discretion throughout the year. Monthly membership includes 10 hours per month, and requires a 12-month commitment.

Space Club | Expansion of Greenpoint location | Opening November 1 

Space Club in Greenpoint is expanding to add 12,000 square feet, making the already spacious play space 22,000 square feet total. New amenities will include a cafe (a partnership with neighbor Paloma Coffee & Bakery), Ninja Warrior ball pit, human size hamster spinning wheels, a vertical playground, glow-in-the-dark drawing room, music room, LEGO room, beading room, 2 additional party rooms, and an additional bathroom and family, room. Birthday Parties at Prospect Park Zoo | Booking Now for November 2024

Prospect Park Zoo, which reopened at the beginning of Summer 2024 after being closed for many months due to flood damage, is finally bringing back children’s birthday parties for ages 3-12 this November. Families can book now to reserve parties for future Saturdays and Sundays, at either 10:15am or 2:00pm. A 90-minute party for up to 30 guests is $810 for zoo members and $900 for non-members. Parties include 2 animal guests, a trip to the barn or pond to feed animals, and an experienced educator. The zoo also provides a private party room, gift bags for each child, and admission for the entire day.

Ice Skating Rink under the Brooklyn Bridge | Returning Winter 2024/25, with $10 tickets for all!

There will be a seasonal ice skating rink at Emily Warren Roebling Plaza once again this winter, but Brooklyn Bridge Park has announced that it will have a new operator and more affordable tickets: just $10 for all ages, at all times! There will also be free skating sessions on weekdays and weekends.
