DUMBO neighborhood news – community sports center, Open Streets, events and pickleball

A new recreation center with an indoor pool is in the works, an outdoor pickleball hub opens this year, family-friendly events are ready to fill your calendar, and an important infrastructure update for the neighborhood has arrived!

Brooklyn Bridge Park is formalizing plans for a new recreation center under the Manhattan Bridge in the former dog run and climbing gym space, located at Adams and Plymouth Street. The new center may include a swimming pool, gym, basketball court, and more. Community planning—including a survey—has just begun, and funding is not yet secured, so this low-fee sports center would probably not open within the next five years.

Open Streets on Washington Street will return for the 2025 season on April 1, running 7 days a week through the holidays. Free DUMBO Family Games, in partnership with the DUMBO BID and Brooklyn Bridge Parents, will take place on car-free Washington Street from May 11 (Mother’s Day) to the end of June and again from September 7 to the end of October (weather permitting).

The Adams Street Library has announced that their branch will reopen on April 1, after being closed since mid-December. Book access and programming for the community will resume upon its reopening. Until then, the Adams Street Annex at 1 John Street will continue to offer select services, such as returning materials, picking up holds, library cards, and borrowing board games. The Annex is open on weekdays from 10am to 5pm, but will be closed on Monday, March 31.

Bklyn Flea flea market will return to the Archway and Pearl Street Plaza the first weekend in April (April 5 & 6) and will run through the holidays.

The annual DUMBO Drop including the free Brooklyn Bridge Parents Kids Zone will take place on Friday, May 30 from 4 to 7pm. Watch elephants parachute into Dumbo—for a good cause! Presale for locals is open, get your tickets for the elephant spectacle here.

CityPickle plans to open 11 outdoor pickleball courts at Anchorage Plaza this year. The NYC Parks Department selected the proposal for the Anchorage Plaza site, which borders DUMBO, Brooklyn Heights and Downtown Brooklyn. The winning concept includes 11 pickle ball courts, park spaces, and more amenities. Anchorage Plaza has been closed to the public for over 10 years and has been used as a parking lot and storage lot for the Department of Transportation.

Live in the Archway summer concerts will take place in June and July in the DUMBO Archway, and Drink and Draw in the Archway will run from mid-June to mid-August. Stay tuned for a full lineup for these free programs, which are both geared towards grown-ups.

As of March 2025, street construction in DUMBO is around 91% complete, and will be finishing up in 2025!
