Bay Ridge is a family-friendly neighborhood in South Brooklyn. Known for its beautiful parks and playgrounds, diverse food options, and gorgeous waterfront views, Bay Ridge offers a community for those who still want access to the city but more of a quiet neighborhood feel at home. Bay Ridge is surrounded by Sunset Park to the north, Dyker Heights to the east, and the Belt Parkway and the Narrows to the south and west. It is a quick trip over the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge to Staten Island and New Jersey.

- Alpine Cinema | Catch a movie then stop by Galaxy Comics next door.
- Brooklyn Public Library Branches | The Bay Ridge branch is located on 73rd Street and the Fort Hamilton branch is located on 95th Street. The Bay Ridge branch offers service 7 days a week and both have children’s programming.
- Fairytale Island Playground | Check out this cute indoor playground and cafe. Admission is $22/child, and tickets are valid for 2 hours. One free adult is included, but an additional adult is $5.
- Ft. Hamilton Bowling Center | This center has bowling, arcade games, and great food. Call before you go to check hours and that there is open bowling available. You must enter the army base at 101st Street and Fort Hamilton Parkway and present a valid ID to gain security clearance.
- Launch Brooklyn | Launch is an indoor play space that includes trampolines, a toddler area, multiple slides, arcade games, and much more. There are no age recommendations, but children should be able to walk. They also offer food for purchase. Launch is open daily and the variety of ticket options can be found here.
- Norma’s Art Studio | Drop in to Norma’s and get creative. Kids of all ages are welcome. They are open Thursday – Sunday. The studio fee is $8 and projects cost between $3 – $20 with all supplies included.
- Peekaboo | Peekaboo is a kid’s bounce and bubble café. Children under 1 cost $15 for two hours or $25 for the full day. Children over 2 cost $25 for two hours or $35 for the full day. Admission is free for one adult and each additional adult is $5. Membership plans are also available. Stop by any day between 11 am – 7 pm.
- Urban Steam Lab | Looking for some scientific fun? Check out Urban Steam’s Open Lab weekend classes, afterschool care options, sessions for homeschoolers, birthday party offerings, and more.
- U.S. Army Garrison Fort Hamilton Swimming Pool | The army base has a beautiful pool with amazing views of the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge that is open to the public with membership.

Parks and sports
- 79th Street Playground | This playground is located in Shore Road Park. In addition to the playground and frog-themed water area, there are basketball courts and baseball fields. It is also a short walk over to the Narrows Botanical Gardens.
- Dan Ross Playground | A small fenced in playground that is well suited for little ones.
- John J. Carty Park | This large park has a recently renovated playground, fitness equipment, and a variety of courts including tennis, pickleball, handball, and basketball.
- John Allen Payne Playground | Fun for children of all ages, this playground has three separate jungle gyms, a water area, and plenty of swings. The park also has basketball and handball courts.
- John Paul Jones Park | Commonly known as Cannonball Park, this is a quiet place to relax, play, or walk your pet. The park was recently repaved and new benches were installed in the summer of 2025.
- Owl’s Head Park | This beautiful park is often used for family and community celebrations. The playground, water area, and basketball courts are currently being renovated and are expected to reopen in February 2026. There is also a skate park and dog run.
- Russell Pedersen Playground | Renovated and reopened in May 2025, this new playground is a favorite in Bay Ridge. There are also handball and basketball courts as well as fitness equipment. This playground is located next to the Fort Hamilton High School field, track, tennis and basketball courts.
- Vinland Playground | Renovated and reopened in November 2024, this gated playground is perfect for young children.

Kid-friendly restaurants
- Arirang Hibachi Steakhouse | Arirang Hibachi Steakhouse is the perfect place for a fun night out with kids. Everyone will be entertained watching their food being cooked right in front of them. Kids eat free with the purchase of an adult entrée on Monday and Tuesday nights.
- The Brooklyn Firefly | Sitting outside at Brooklyn Firefly is a summer tradition. In other seasons, get cozy inside. Their creative pizzas are great for sharing. They also have a large selection of vegan pizzas and calzones.
- Panino Rustico | Panino Rustico offers a large kid’s menu and yummy smoothies. Parents will enjoy the variety of bruschetta and panini options. Their outdoor seating is a prime spot for people watching on Third Avenue.
- Skinflints | Skinflints is always a hit for children! While eating a meal off the kid’s menu, children stay entertained watching the trains travel around the restaurant. Skinflints also decorates for every holiday. They offer daily specials and a delicious brunch menu that includes a cocktail with your meal. Join them in celebrating their 50th anniversary!
- Vesuvio | Vesuvio is the place for large family gatherings. Make a reservation to enjoy their classic Italian dishes. Their pasta with vodka sauce is a must order. And save room for dessert, which includes Italian ice or gelato for the kids! Be sure to ask about their family meals.
- Yemenat | Yemenat serves authentic Yemeni cuisine that has garnered praise from the New York Times and earned the restaurant a spot in the 2025 Michelin Guide. Expect large portions meant for sharing and a menu full of comforting dishes like lamb haneeth, stews, and freshly baked bread that are great for both kids and adults.

- Tanoreen | Tanoreen is a neighborhood favorite for date nights and celebrations. Along with a warm ambiance, their Palestinian & Middle Eastern food is imaginative and flavorful. Their inspired drink list includes the Figtini, Pistachio Martini, and the Za’atar Mezcal Margarita.
- Terina | Terina is a new modern Italian supper club in the neighborhood. This elegant spot provides an evening of exceptional food and cocktails. What you should not miss in Bay Ridge
- American Veterans Memorial Pier | The Pier is a popular place to gather with family and friends or go fishing. Throughout the year, many running events start here and follow the scenic walkway along the water. There is also a NYC Ferry stop here.
- Baklava at Brooklyn Baklava | This traditional Lebanese bakery is known for its delicious baklava and other Middle Eastern desserts.
- Balady Halal Supermarket | This supermarket is full of specialty and imported foods. Find a familiar favorite or try something new from this 100% Halal market.
- Gifts and Souvenirs | Classic Impressions has a fun selection of Brooklyn and NYC themed gifts.
- Have a Slice | If you ask for the best pizza in Bay Ridge, you’ll get many different answers. Start with Pizza Wagon – “A True Bay Ridginal” since 1966!
- Holiday Decorations | Bay Ridge loves to decorate, especially for Halloween. If you are around the neighborhood during any holidays, be sure to stop by the 79th Street Holiday House!
- Mike’s Donuts | Start your day with a delicious donut and coffee from Mike’s – a Bay Ridge go-to since 1976!
- Shore Parkway Greenway | Take a walk on the promenade by the water, admire the views, and snap a picture with the Verrazzanos-Narrows Bridge in the background.

Schools in Bay Ridge
- Public schools: Located in District 20, there are many elementary school options in Bay Ridge, including PS/IS 30, PS 102, PS/IS 104, PS 170, PS 185, PS 264, and PS 413. Middle schools include PS/IS 30, PS/IS 104, and the newly opened MS 407, and many children attend IS 259 William McKinley in Dyker Heights. Older children can attend the High School of Telecommunication Arts and Technology or Fort Hamilton High School. Fort Hamilton, one of the largest high schools in NYC, has specialty programs like Army Junior ROTC, Joffrey Dance Academy, and Honors Academy.
- Private schools: Children can attend Adelphi Academy of Brooklyn for grades 3K-12. Bay Ridge Prep serves students in grades K-12. Bay Ridge Catholic, Dimitrios & Georgia Kaloidis Parochial School, Lutheran Elementary School, or St. Patrick Catholic Academy offers grades 3K-8. For students in grades 6-12, they can attend Xaverian or Fontbonne Hall Academy for young women.
- Preschools: District 20 Pre-K Centers Z111 and Z072, Miss Jenn’s Little Achievers, Our Saviour’s Lutheran Preschool, Stepping Stones and Stepping Stones – The Next Step, Wisdom Tree Preschool, and more are just some of the many preschool options in Bay Ridge.

Downsides of Bay Ridge
- Bay Ridge is only serviced by the R train which runs local. Riders can transfer at 59th Street or 36th Street for express service. Fortunately, commuters also have access to express buses and NYC Ferry’s Faster Connections service.
