The matriarch of Williamsburg Puerto Rican social club Toñita’s was featured during the performance, while surprise guest Lady Gaga wore a dress by Brooklyn-based Dominican designer Raul Lopez.

“I Miss My Black Brooklyn” article in New York Magazine reflects on Black displacement in Brooklyn

In a New York Magazine essay, novelist Naomi Jackson reflects on the gentrification of Brooklyn and the displacement of Black residents. Drawing on her upbringing in Crown Heights and Flatbush, she shares both personal experience and data that reveals a sharp decline in the city’s Black population, particularly in historically Black neighborhoods. From 2000 to 2020, nearly 200,000 Black residents left New York City–9% of the city’s Black population. In 2000, Black residents made up approximately 75% of Bed-Stuy’s population. That percentage dropped to 40% between 2019–2023.

Bushwick daycare teacher charged with sexually abusing young girls

A 30-year-old man has been placed in custody following allegations of repeated sexual abuse of girls under his care. The abuse allegedly took place both in the daycare center and, in one instance, on a trip to Brooklyn Bridge Park’s Pier 6. The girls ranged between 5-9 years old at the time of the abuse which took place between April 2024 and August 2025.

NYC private school tuitions surpass $70K, including Poly Prep in Brooklyn

Tuition rates for the upcoming school year have been released, with top Manhattan private soaring past the $70K mark, including Poly Prep in Brooklyn, which ranges from $70,076 for 5th Grade to $71,852 for 12th Grade. Other Brooklyn schools including St. Ann’s & Packer in Brooklyn Heights fall in the $60K+ range.

Mamdani announces opening of Shirley Chisholm Recreation Center in Flatbush 

Brooklyn’s largest recreation center has opened in East Flatbush’s Nostrand Playground. The 74,000-square-foot Shirley Chisholm Recreation Center includes a competition-grade indoor pool, double-height NCAA-sized basketball court, dedicated youth spaces, a full gym, media lab, teaching kitchen, dance studio, and community spaces spread across three stories, along with terraces, gardens, and an 8,500-square-foot green roof.

Schools Chancellor Kamar Samuels announces listening tour

Newly appointed Schools Chancellor Kamar Samuels will visit all five boroughs as part of a city-wide listening tour. Students, parents, teachers, and staff will be invited to share their opinions on a wide variety of school issues. The tour includes upcoming Brooklyn dates on February 28 (Thomas Jefferson High School, 10:30am-12:00pm) and March 24 (John Dewey High School, 6:30-8:00pm).

Sauna village opens on Williamsburg waterfront, with family-friendly sessions February 17–19

The largest sauna village ever staged in the US, called Culture of Bathing, has taken over Domino Park in Williamsburg, featuring 15 uniquely designed saunas set to varying temperatures along the waterfront. The festival also includes guided breathwork, meditation, German-style aufguss rituals, cold plunges, and more programming from Pioneer Works. Open daily from 7am to 10pm, the village will remain open with 2-hour sessions until March 1, 2026. Tickets start at $60/adult during non-peak weekday hours, and go up to $125/adult during weekend evening hours.

From February 17–19, Culture of Bathe-ing will offer special family-focused sessions for ages 5–17 during NYC public schools’ Mid-Winter Break, While typically 18+, these kid-friendly hours at Culture of Bathing will feature age-appropriate programming; tickets are $40, and children must attend with an adult. Book here!
