Infrastructure & real estate news for Brooklyn families July, 2026

Changes are coming to Brooklyn’s parks and housing landscapes. This month’s roundup highlights major future developments across the borough, from a newly proposed $5 billion master plan to bring 5,600 new apartments and green space to Downtown Brooklyn’s Atlantic Yards, to the officially greenlit Monitor Point development in Greenpoint, which secures investments to complete the Bushwick Inlet Park. Families can also look forward to infrastructure upgrades at Oracle Playground and Commodore Barry Park.

Monitor Point Development Approved | Greenpoint

The City Council has officially approved the Monitor Point housing development in Greenpoint. The finalized deal guarantees that 50% of the project (662 units) will be deeply affordable housing. In addition to housing, the agreement delivers significant neighborhood upgrades:

  • New Parks & Green Space: A commitment from the Mayor to complete the 27-acre Bushwick Inlet Park, plus 52,000 square feet of public waterfront open space and the clearance of land for the future Box Street Park.
  • Transit & Infrastructure: A $60 million investment to make the Nassau G subway station fully ADA accessible with a new elevator.
  • Community Perks: Two new public bathrooms for park-goers, climate-resilient waterfront infrastructure, affordable space for local non-profits, and a permanent home for the Monitor Museum.

City unveils new $5 Billion Plan for Atlantic Yards | Downtown Brooklyn

A new development team has unveiled a $5 billion proposal to finally complete the decades-long Atlantic Yards megaproject in Downtown Brooklyn. Developers Cirrus Real Estate Partners and LCOR are proposing six new high-rises over the Vanderbilt rail tracks, replacing previously planned office space to add 5,600 apartments—including roughly 1,200 income-restricted units. Slated to break ground in 2028, the revised master plan zeroes in on major new family-friendly additions, carving out 20,000 square feet of community facility space and 140,000 square feet of new retail. To anchor the neighborhood, the developers have tapped Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates—the landscape architecture firm behind Brooklyn Bridge Park—to design the new public green spaces, plazas, and pedestrian walkways that will be constructed on the platforms over the rail yards.

Oracle playground upgrade | Fort Greene

NYC Parks will begin reconstruction of the restroom and playground on the west side of Oracle Playground on July 6, which will remain closed for one calendar year. The east side will remain open and usable.

Commodore Barry Park upgrade | Downtown Brooklyn

NYC Parks will begin reconstruction of the natural turf ballfields and construct new sports lighting and a track around the ballfields in Commodore Barry Park on July 13. This area will remain closed for one calendar year. The east side will remain open and usable.

Carroll Street Bridge | Gowanus | NOW OPEN

After 5 years of being closed, the Carroll Street Bridge has reopened for pedestrians and cyclists! Come take a stroll.

Prospect Park Vale | Prospect Park | Reopening 2027

The Prospect Park Vale restoration began this month and expects to conclude in 2027. This $37.5 million, 8-acre project is the single largest capital allocation to Prospect Park since Lakeside back in 2010-2013. A new children’s nature exploration area is part of the design!
