Free kid-friendly events this week in Brooklyn (8/3-8/9)

August is here! This week, families can celebrate National Night Out, attend a reading party in Sunset Park, learn about dinosaurs and watch Jurassic Park at Brooklyn Bridge Park, stroll on Third Avenue in Bay Ridge, create at a STEAM fair in Fort Greene, attend a summer festival in Bed-Stuy, dribble in Brooklyn Bridge Park with the NY Liberty, and much more!

MONDAY

Free Admission Days at the Pier 2 Roller Skating Rink | Brooklyn Bridge Park

Mondays & Fridays | 3:30pm-6:00pm | FREE admission but skate rental is $8 and skate mate rental is $6

Come to the Pier 2 Roller Skating Rink for some free family fun and exercise. Enjoy the fresh air and gorgeous views as you skate around the rink.

 

TUESDAY

Tot Time Tuesdays | Shirley Chisholm State Park

Tuesdays | 10:00am-11:30am | Ages 2-5, but all are welcome

Come to the Hendrix Creek Patio for a fun morning of toddler-friendly activities, including crafts, storytime at 10:30am and a hike at 11:00am.

National Night Out | Sunset Park

Tuesday, August 4th | 3:00pm-7:00pm

Check out the annual National Night Out for the 72nd Precinct! They’ll have music, games, bounce houses, and more. There will also be a bike raffle.

National Night Out | Brooklyn Bridge Park 

Tuesday, August 4th | 5:00pm

Celebrate National Night Out with the 84th Precinct at Brooklyn Bridge Park. There will be free food and fun for the whole family.

National Night Out | Bay Ridge

Come to 79th Street Playground for free food, music, activities, and giveaways.

 

WEDNESDAY

Storytime in the Park | Fort Greene

Wednesdays in May-October | 11:00am

Sing, read, and play with librarians from Walt Whitman Library in Fort Greene Park! Have fun hearing great picture books read aloud and playing with other children during this program. For children of all ages and their caregivers. This program will be located at the bottom of the Monument stairs near Myrtle Playground and runs on Wednesdays at 11:ooam-11:45am from May 13th-October 14th.

Summer Movies in the Park: Shrek 2 | Prospect Park

Wednesday, August 5th | Lawn opens at 6:00pm, Film begins at 8:30pm | RSVP here

Enjoy this beloved animated feature starring Shrek and his love, Fiona! Now married, they travel to Fiona’s kingdom, Far Far Away. Prospect Park Alliance, Fort Greene Park Conservancy, and Rooftop Films announce Summer Movies in the Park, presented by NewYork-Presbyterian. This free, outdoor movie series in Prospect Park and Fort Greene Park takes place on Wednesday nights this summer, with screenings on August 5th and August 12th in Prospect Park, and August 26th and September 9th in Fort Greene Park.

Calling all parents and caregivers with children! Join a Prospect Park Alliance Naturalist for a leisurely stroll along Prospect Park’s waterways. Embrace the sound of streams and songs of birds, while enjoying fragrant flowers and the towering trees of Brooklyn’s Backyard. Please note that this walk leaves promptly at 10:00am the Prospect Park Boathouse.

Comic Book Drawing Class with Mr. Nick | Red Hook

Thursday, August 6th | 3:00pm-4:00pm | Ages 10 and up

Come to the Red Hook Interim Library on Van Brunt St. to learn something new or indulge your child’s love of drawing. Tweens and teens will be drawing and learning about art from Mr. Nick. Topics such as how to make comic books, cartoons and graphic novels will be covered. Mr. Nick is a professional artist that has created and published his own series of comic books. Don’t miss out. Beginners are always welcome! All supplies will be provided.

Reading Party with Reading Rhythm | Sunset Park

Reading Rhythms is not a book club — it’s a reading party. And this summer, they’re bringing their signature experience to the Brooklyn waterfront for one unforgettable evening at the Terminal.

Movies With A View: Jurassic Park | Brooklyn Bridge Park

Thursday, July 30th | 6:00pm-10:00pm

One of Brooklyn Bridge Park’s most popular series, Movies With A View presented by Persol, returns for its 26th season with outdoor films on Thursday evenings in July and August – expanding with an additional family film night on September 18th. Come early to enjoy a picnic on the lawn and refreshing waterfront breezes, with New York Harbor and Manhattan skyline views like no other as the sun sets. Entry is free and first-come, first serve starting at 6:00 PM. Movies begin at sunset. This week’s screening will be Jurassic Park (PG-13, 1993, 122 minutes), when scientists first set foot on Isla Nubar and encounter the adventure of a lifetime. Before the movie, join for a conversation with dinosaur paleobiologist Jingmai O’Connor! She is a curator at the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago. Her research focuses on the evolution of birds and other feathered dinosaurs. She’ll be discussing what we really know about dinosaurs depicted in the movie, some insights into her paleontology work, and some fun dinosaur facts!

Stomp, Clap & Sing with Dan Saks of Noodle Loaf | Flatbush

Dan Saks, an award-winning musician, children’s book author and host of the popular music education podcast for kids, Noodle Loaf, will lead kids and their grown-ups in singing, moving, rhyming and goofing. Come ready to rock with Dan and the Saks Family Band as they perform Noodle Loaf hits and celebrate Dan’s newest board book Families Grow. No tickets necessary. Please arrive early for seating — this will fill up fast! This event will take place at the Cortelyou Library.

Summer Stroll on Third Avenue | Bay Ridge

Bring the whole family for a walk on Third Avenue. The August 7th stroll will take place between 82nd Street and Marine Avenue. There will be live music and performances, outdoor dining, and more! There will also be a special performance from the Brooklyn Chamber Orchestra, who will transform the Citizens Bank parking lot in Bay Ridge into an open-air concert experience – you don’t want to miss it!

Hindu Lamp Ceremony | Brooklyn Bridge Park

The 14th annual Hindu Lamp Ceremony returns to Brooklyn Bridge Park. Dance artist and educator Aeilushi Mistry brings peace and harmony to the community as she performs the traditional Hindu Aarti ceremony on the banks of the East River at Pebble Beach. The Aarti ceremony is traditionally performed each morning and evening along India’s rivers, in order to convey gratitude to mother river, reflect on community, and remember loved ones. Join to make a blessing and pay respects to loved ones. Ajna Dance Company will be performing at 6:00pm and 7:00pm.

Smorgasburg Matsuri: Japan Meets Brooklyn | Prospect Park

Soul Summit | Fort Greene Park

The Soul Summit Music Festival is an event that takes place in Fort Greene Park in Brooklyn every summer. It is organized and led by Soul Summit Music, the DJ collective founded in 2002 by Sadiq Bellamy, Tabu, and Jeff Mendoza. Over the past fourteen years Soul Summit Music has become an institution developing a loyal following that brings the hills of Fort Greene Park alive with families, food, and dancing.
