Drag Story Hour is just what it sounds like: storytellers using the art of drag to read books to kids in libraries, schools, and bookstores. Youth Basketball Clinic with King Hoops | Pier 2 @ Brooklyn Bridge Park

Brooklyn Bridge Park is hosting free basketball clinics with King Hoops this summer for kids 4-17! Players may join for individual weeks or the full season. The first hour (5-6 PM) will be for beginner players who are brand new to the sport. Here they will teach the very basic fundamentals of the game, the rules of the game, and getting acclimated to having a ball in each player’s hands. The second hour (6 – 7 PM) is geared for advanced beginners to intermediate players who have played a little bit more basketball. Advanced registration and waivers are required. After Memorial Day weekend, free admission hours at the New York Aquarium in Coney Island are extended from 3:00 all the way to 6:00 p.m. Check out larger-than-life animal sculptures made out of repurposed marine debris in the current exhibition Washed Ashore, open through September 2. Note that advance timed tickets are required; the Wednesday Afternoon Ticket Store will open on Monday at 3:00 pm for that Wednesday’s reservations. Do not come to the aquarium without a reserved ticket! There’s a maximum of 4 tickets per order.

Join us for dynamic storytelling from Alexander Elisa! Worlds collide when this actor-singer-dancer-writer engages audiences. When Alexander tells a story you’ll shake, laugh, swing and sing. Prepare to be moved! Alexander Elisa is an award-winning actor who has been a featured soloist in stateside operettas (Yeomen of the Guard, Candide, The Student Prince) and international gospel concerts. He has Off-Broadway and numerous regional theater credits (Smokey Joe’s Café, Dreamgirls, Beauty & the Beast, West Side Story). He’s done film, voice-over, and even scored a recurring role on a children’s television show (Kid Fitness, PBS). Up until 2020, for almost four years, Alexander’s weekly showcase Showtime Saturdays with Alexander at the Sugar Hill Children’s Museum brought family audiences to and from Harlem to revel in the artist’s rendition of original, adapted and even improvised tales. For families and children ages 5 to 12.

  The New York Arts Pro­gram is part­ner­ing with the Inde­ter­mi­na­cy Fes­ti­val’s Artis­tic Direc­tor Stanzi Vaubel and invit­ing artists to par­tic­i­pate in a net­work of per­for­mances at Governor’s Island called Four­teen Porch­es. On June 7, Four­teen Porch­es, a site-spe­cif­ic per­for­mance, will open the Fes­ti­val. Fea­tur­ing orig­i­nal music by Philippe Treuille and Stanzi Vaubel and involv­ing choir, cham­ber orches­tra, youth musi­cians, dance, and New York Arts Pro­gram appren­tices, the per­for­mance will be set on four­teen porch­es across Nolan Park on Governors Island. On June 8, experience Trace Reverb Trace, an instal­la­tion by Lili Maya and James Rou­velle, and Nolan Place, an audi­ence-acti­vat­ed per­for­mance by Eve Suss­man, Simon Lee, and Volk­mar Klien.

  All are invit­ed to join an upcom­ing open rehearsal by Dance Hegin­both­am of their newest work, You Look Like a Fun Guy, which will have its world pre­mière at the Brook­lyn Botan­ic Gar­den in August 2024. You Look Like a Fun Guy is an out­door per­for­mance event inspired by John Cage’s inter­est in mycol­o­gy and his meth­ods of com­pos­ing music. Broad­cast­ing and height­en­ing the nat­ur­al son­ic envi­ron­ment live, Omar Zubair’s audio instal­la­tion plays with the audience’s per­cep­tion of real­i­ty and is paired with orig­i­nal music com­posed by Col­in Jacob­son, with cos­tumes by Maile Oka­mu­ra. You Look Like a Fun Guy cel­e­brates Cage’s rig­or­ous and play­ful con­cerns as well as the aston­ish­ing nature and behav­ior of fun­gi. Shaped and informed by its sur­round­ings, this unique per­for­mance event responds to the nat­ur­al envi­ron­ment it inhabits.

Family Flows is a collaboration between House of Flow and children’s yoga company Yogie Land. Our 45-minute sessions are crafted for you and your child to enjoy yoga classes simultaneously, side by side, in various parks around Brooklyn. While parents engage in a vinyasa yoga class with one of our House of Flow instructors, children can embark on an adventure-filled journey at Yogie Land with Grant Henry and Yogie the Dogie. At the end of the session, everyone reunites for an extended rest accompanied by live music from our featured musician of the day. Everyone is welcome to join, but please note that Yogie Land is specifically designed for children ages 6 months to 5 years old. If your child is under 2.5 years old, we require a second parent or adult to be present for the entire duration of the Yogie Land class. Read to a dog at the library! Our certified therapy dog Flash Gordon loves to be read to. Kids can make enormous strides in building self-esteem and confidence while acquiring a love of books by reading to a therapy dog. Utilizing a registered therapy animal and their human teammate in a calm and relaxing atmosphere, this program helps improve children’s reading, communication, and social skills. The goal of the program is for kids to read in a specific environment. Grown ups, if you’re comfortable, we ask that the kids attend the 10 minute session on their own, thank you! Sign up at the desk for a 10 minute slot on the day of the program. First come, first serve. Space is limited to six children per session.

Join for a panel discussion and DJ set dedicated to the legacy of yacht rock. Moderated by Scott Barkham (artist manager, yacht rock aficionado, the panel includes Gary Katz (producer, Steely Dan) and Rich Medina (world-renowned DJ). This event kicks off the Conservancy’s new Lazy Daze series, featuring an opportunity to relax, lay out, and enjoy chill Sunday afternoons at Pier 6 Liberty Lawn in Brooklyn Bridge Park while a rotation of DJs are featured in the background. Food and drink will be available for sale by Fornino.
