The first hour (5-6 PM) will be for beginner players who are brand new to the sport. Here they will teach the very basic fundamentals of the game, the rules of the game, and getting acclimated to having a ball in each player’s hands. Glide along the water this summer and fall in our protected embayment with free public kayaking! Free kayaking is offered throughout the summer on Wednesday and Thursday evenings, and Saturday and Sunday afternoons through September. Alexander Elisa is an award-winning actor who has been a featured soloist in stateside operettas (Yeomen of the Guard, Candide, The Student Prince) and international gospel concerts. He has Off-Broadway and numerous regional theater credits (Smokey Joe’s Café, Dreamgirls, Beauty & the Beast, West Side Story). He’s done film, voice-over, and even scored a recurring role on a children’s television show (Kid Fitness, PBS). Up until 2020, for almost four years, Alexander’s weekly showcase Showtime Saturdays with Alexander at the Sugar Hill Children’s Museum brought family audiences to and from Harlem to revel in the artist’s rendition of original, adapted and even improvised tales. The New York Arts Program is partnering with the Indeterminacy Festival’s Artistic Director Stanzi Vaubel and inviting artists to participate in a network of performances at Governor’s Island called Fourteen Porches. On June 7, Fourteen Porches, a site-specific performance, will open the Festival. Featuring original music by Philippe Treuille and Stanzi Vaubel and involving choir, chamber orchestra, youth musicians, dance, and New York Arts Program apprentices, the performance will be set on fourteen porches across Nolan Park on Governors Island. All are invited to join an upcoming open rehearsal by Dance Heginbotham of their newest work, You Look Like a Fun Guy, which will have its world première at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden in August 2024. You Look Like a Fun Guy is an outdoor performance event inspired by John Cage’s interest in mycology and his methods of composing music. Broadcasting and heightening the natural sonic environment live, Omar Zubair’s audio installation plays with the audience’s perception of reality and is paired with original music composed by Colin Jacobson, with costumes by Maile Okamura. You Look Like a Fun Guy celebrates Cage’s rigorous and playful concerns as well as the astonishing nature and behavior of fungi. Shaped and informed by its surroundings, this unique performance event responds to the natural environment it inhabits.

Family Flows is a collaboration between House of Flow and children’s yoga company Yogie Land. Our 45-minute sessions are crafted for you and your child to enjoy yoga classes simultaneously, side by side, in various parks around Brooklyn. While parents engage in a vinyasa yoga class with one of our House of Flow instructors, children can embark on an adventure-filled journey at Yogie Land with Grant Henry and Yogie the Dogie. At the end of the session, everyone reunites for an extended rest accompanied by live music from our featured musician of the day. Everyone is welcome to join, but please note that Yogie Land is specifically designed for children ages 6 months to 5 years old. If your child is under 2.5 years old, we require a second parent or adult to be present for the entire duration of the Yogie Land class. Read to a dog at the library! Our certified therapy dog Flash Gordon loves to be read to. Kids can make enormous strides in building self-esteem and confidence while acquiring a love of books by reading to a therapy dog. Utilizing a registered therapy animal and their human teammate in a calm and relaxing atmosphere, this program helps improve children’s reading, communication, and social skills. The goal of the program is for kids to read in a specific environment. Grown ups, if you’re comfortable, we ask that the kids attend the 10 minute session on their own, thank you!
