Free kid-friendly events this week in Brooklyn (6/3-6/9)

This week is filled with family-friendly events in Brooklyn, including the Greek Festival in Brooklyn Heights, Governor’s Island Lavender Festival, BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn’s Family Day concert at the Prospect Park Bandshell, the Brooklyn Pride Parade and so many more Pride events, plus the Photoville Festival, DJ sets, and Father’s Day card making at the DUMBO Family Games. Greek Festival | Brooklyn Heights

Monday, June 3 – Sunday, June 9 

The Greek Orthodox Cathedral is hosting its annual Greek street fair from Monday, June 3 to Sunday, June 9, 2024 on car-free Schermerhorn Street. There will be traditional food, dancing, live music, kids activities and much more daily starting at 11 am. Special highlight Brooklyn Bouzouki Night on Thursday with live music and dancing. Drag Story Hour is just what it sounds like: storytellers using the art of drag to read books to kids in libraries, schools, and bookstores. DSH captures the imagination and play of the gender fluidity of childhood and gives kids glamorous, positive, and unabashedly queer role models. In spaces like this, kids are able to see people who defy rigid gender restrictions and imagine a world where everyone can be their authentic selves! Recommended for ages 3 and up. Registration is recommended. Youth Basketball Clinic with King Hoops | Pier 2 @ Brooklyn Bridge Park

Tuesday, June 4 | 5-7pm | Ages 4-17

Brooklyn Bridge Park is hosting free basketball clinics with King Hoops this summer for kids 4-17! Players may join for individual weeks or the full season. The first hour (5-6 PM) will be for beginner players who are brand new to the sport. Here they will teach the very basic fundamentals of the game, the rules of the game, and getting acclimated to having a ball in each player’s hands. The second hour (6 – 7 PM) is geared for advanced beginners to intermediate players who have played a little bit more basketball. Advanced registration and waivers are required. Free Admission at New York Aquarium | Coney Island

After Memorial Day weekend, free admission hours at the New York Aquarium in Coney Island are extended from 3:00 all the way to 6:00 p.m. Check out larger-than-life animal sculptures made out of repurposed marine debris in the current exhibition Washed Ashore, open through September 2. Note that advance timed tickets are required; the Wednesday Afternoon Ticket Store will open on Monday at 3:00 pm for that Wednesday’s reservations. Do not come to the aquarium without a reserved ticket! There’s a maximum of 4 tickets per order.

Teen DIY: Paint flags to show your PRIDE @ Brooklyn Heights Library | Brooklyn Heights

Glide along the water this summer and fall in our protected embayment with free public kayaking! Free kayaking is offered throughout the summer on Wednesday and Thursday evenings, and Saturday and Sunday afternoons through September. All levels are welcome including first-time kayakers — life vests and all equipment provided, as well as instruction. Children under 18 must have an adult guardian present. Advanced registration required, providing 20 minute timed slots. Free registration opens 2 weeks ahead of each date.

Calling all parents and caregivers with children! Join a Prospect Park Alliance Naturalist at the Prospect Park Audubon Center for a leisurely stroll along Prospect Park’s waterways. Please note that this walk leaves promptly at 10 am from the Prospect Park Audubon Center.

Brooklyn’s kindie titans Rolie Polie Guacamole, have been perfecting their show over the last decade scooping up several Parents’ Choice awards along the way. Their shows incorporate fun, fresh and smart lyrics in a style appealing to kids and adults alike.   • Robert Garcia, the world’s favorite BoyGirl, will perform his international hits.
  • The Bad Judies, New York City’s only all-drag queen band, blend comedy, camp, fashion, and fun for an unforgettable performance.

Join Prospect Park Alliance for family-friendly programming on Chancellor’s Day at the Prospect Park Audubon Center and the Carousel. Nature education programs will be themed around Pollinator Month! After the nature programs, take a ride on the Prospect Park Carousel ($3 per ride, $13 for a book of 5 tickets).

  • Butterfly Watch | 12–3 pm | Learn about NYC common butterflies, their life cycle, and how they help plants.
  • Animal Encounter | 2–3 pm | Join Prospect Park Alliance naturalists in learning more about the animals in the Audubon Center’s collection. This program starts promptly at 2 pm.
  • Nature on the Go! | 3–4 pm | Join a Prospect Park Alliance Naturalist for Nature on the Go activities to explore the park and learn about the nature around us.

Summer at the Library Kickoff: Stories with Alexander @ Central Library | Grand Army Plaza

Join us for dynamic storytelling from Alexander Elisa! Worlds collide when this actor-singer-dancer-writer engages audiences. When Alexander tells a story you’ll shake, laugh, swing and sing. Prepare to be moved! Alexander Elisa is an award-winning actor who has been a featured soloist in stateside operettas (Yeomen of the Guard, Candide, The Student Prince) and international gospel concerts. He has Off-Broadway and numerous regional theater credits (Smokey Joe’s Café, Dreamgirls, Beauty & the Beast, West Side Story). He’s done film, voice-over, and even scored a recurring role on a children’s television show (Kid Fitness, PBS). Up until 2020, for almost four years, Alexander’s weekly showcase Showtime Saturdays with Alexander at the Sugar Hill Children’s Museum brought family audiences to and from Harlem to revel in the artist’s rendition of original, adapted and even improvised tales. For families and children ages 5 to 12.

Camp Day at Dodge YMCA | Boerum Hill

Check the Dodge YMCA’s summer camp program  at Camp Day on Friday, June 7th from 3pm-6pm. Enjoy family games, activities, crafts, giveaways, food, meet camp staff, and much more! On the spot camp registration! Summer is right around the corner and the Dodge YMCA summer camp is ready to give your kids the best summer ever! Choose from Kinder Camp (ages 4-5), Traditional Camp (ages 6-12), Sports Camp (ages 8-12) or Swim Camp (ages 8-12). Each day is filled with fun, enriching activities such as arts and crafts, STEM and Build-a Bear. Campers will have the opportunity to swim in all camps and take field trips.     Lower Man­hat­tan Cul­tur­al Coun­cil (LMCC) presents the 23nd annu­al Riv­er To Riv­er Fes­ti­val!  Fea­tur­ing 13 projects of live art, per­for­mances, and par­tic­i­pa­to­ry events, the Riv­er To Riv­er Fes­ti­val explores themes of res­o­nance, recon­sid­er­a­tion, and resistance.   • Interdeterminacy Festival: Fourteen Porches | Friday, June 7, 7-8pm & Saturday, June 8, 2-6pm
    The New York Arts Pro­gram is part­ner­ing with the Inde­ter­mi­na­cy Fes­ti­val’s Artis­tic Direc­tor Stanzi Vaubel and invit­ing artists to par­tic­i­pate in a net­work of per­for­mances at Governor’s Island called Four­teen Porch­es. On June 7, Four­teen Porch­es, a site-spe­cif­ic per­for­mance, will open the Fes­ti­val. Fea­tur­ing orig­i­nal music by Philippe Treuille and Stanzi Vaubel and involv­ing choir, cham­ber orches­tra, youth musi­cians, dance, and New York Arts Pro­gram appren­tices, the per­for­mance will be set on four­teen porch­es across Nolan Park on Governors Island. On June 8, experience Trace Reverb Trace, an instal­la­tion by Lili Maya and James Rou­velle, and Nolan Place, an audi­ence-acti­vat­ed per­for­mance by Eve Suss­man, Simon Lee, and Volk­mar Klien.

    All are invit­ed to join an upcom­ing open rehearsal by Dance Hegin­both­am of their newest work, You Look Like a Fun Guy, which will have its world pre­mière at the Brook­lyn Botan­ic Gar­den in August 2024You Look Like a Fun Guy is an out­door per­for­mance event inspired by John Cage’s inter­est in mycol­o­gy and his meth­ods of com­pos­ing music. Broad­cast­ing and height­en­ing the nat­ur­al son­ic envi­ron­ment live, Omar Zubair’s audio instal­la­tion plays with the audience’s per­cep­tion of real­i­ty and is paired with orig­i­nal music com­posed by Col­in Jacob­son, with cos­tumes by Maile Oka­mu­ra. You Look Like a Fun Guy cel­e­brates Cage’s rig­or­ous and play­ful con­cerns as well as the aston­ish­ing nature and behav­ior of fun­gi. Shaped and informed by its sur­round­ings, this unique per­for­mance event responds to the nat­ur­al envi­ron­ment it inhabits.

Family Flows is a collaboration between House of Flow and children’s yoga company Yogie Land. Our 45-minute sessions are crafted for you and your child to enjoy yoga classes simultaneously, side by side, in various parks around Brooklyn. While parents engage in a vinyasa yoga class with one of our House of Flow instructors, children can embark on an adventure-filled journey at Yogie Land with Grant Henry and Yogie the Dogie. At the end of the session, everyone reunites for an extended rest accompanied by live music from our featured musician of the day. Everyone is welcome to join, but please note that Yogie Land is specifically designed for children ages 6 months to 5 years old. If your child is under 2.5 years old, we require a second parent or adult to be present for the entire duration of the Yogie Land class. Please bring a yoga mat and any props you might need for the class.

Held biweekly with sessions ranging from bird identification and recycling minigames, to sharing all sorts of knowledge with one another, kids can expect to participate in hands-on activities and experiments and learn from their fellow Young Naturalists. Sessions are free to attend! Simply meet the Youth Leader of the day, at the Visitors Center and enjoy a youth-led session.

Read to a dog at the library! Our certified therapy dog Flash Gordon loves to be read to. Kids can make enormous strides in building self-esteem and confidence while acquiring a love of books by reading to a therapy dog. Utilizing a registered therapy animal and their human teammate in a calm and relaxing atmosphere, this program helps improve children’s reading, communication, and social skills. The goal of the program is for kids to read in a specific environment. Grown ups, if you’re comfortable, we ask that the kids attend the 10 minute session on their own, thank you! Sign up at the desk for a 10 minute slot on the day of the program. First come, first serve. Space is limited to six children per session.

The only evening parade in the Northeast, the street will be filled with organizations showing up to march in support of the amazing and vibrant LGBTQIA+ community.

9th Annual Brooklyn International Music Fest with Jalopy Theatre | Red Hook

The International Music Festival is a three-day celebration of the music and culture hosted by the Jalopy Theatre in Red Hook. While there will be ticketed performances at Jalopy Theatre on Friday and Sunday, Saturday’s lineup will be performing on the free Open Streets Stage:

Moderated by Scott Barkham (artist manager, yacht rock aficionado, the panel includes Gary Katz (producer, Steely Dan) and Rich Medina (world-renowned DJ). This event kicks off the Conservancy’s new Lazy Daze series, featuring an opportunity to relax, lay out, and enjoy chill Sunday afternoons at Pier 6 Liberty Lawn in Brooklyn Bridge Park while a rotation of DJs are featured in the background.
