Meet Liane Stegmaier, Brooklyn mom and game changer at Brooklyn Org, Brooklyn’s Community Foundation

Meet Brooklyn mom and Brooklyn Org Chief of Staff, Liane Stegmaier, find out about her work at the non-profit that has moved over $110 million to nonprofits in Brooklyn and her life in Brooklyn.

Your job title: Chief of Staff, Brooklyn Org

Your work in one sentence: Inspiring Brooklynites to become backers of change, right in their own backyards

Your child: One daughter Evangeline, age 5

Where does your kid go to school: She’s currently in preschool pre-K and will be attending PS889 next year

Which neighborhood do you live in: Ditmas Park

What do you love about living in Brooklyn: I’ve been lucky to live in Brooklyn for 20 years, and I’ve had the chance to call many neighborhoods home – Carroll Gardens, Prospect Heights, Crown Heights, then Kensington and now Ditmas Park. Every neighborhood has its charms, its characters, and its own culture – and that’s why I love Brooklyn so much. We are a collection of small towns and communities that unite together into one PROUD, diverse, dynamic city anchored by incredible parks and cultural institutions. There’s no place else like it (although many places aspire to be!). But what really makes Brooklyn special is the people – we really care about one another and that generosity comes in so many forms. It is amazing to now raise a native Brooklynite who has every possible experience at her doorstep and so much to learn from her neighbors and her community. I am forever grateful.

More information about Brooklyn Org and the new campaign: Brooklyn Org is a unique platform and partner for local philanthropy, bringing together all Brooklynites to become champions for change in our communities. Each year, we collectively invest millions of dollars in nonprofits around the borough working across every issue to help our neighbors thrive. We’ve been doing this work as Brooklyn’s best kept secret for the past 15 years, moving over $110 million to hundreds of local groups. But we don’t want to be a secret anymore! This Spring, we’re rolling out our first PSA campaign, “Show Brooklyn Some Love,” — created by our pro bono partners at Brooklyn-headquartered Mother New York — with an invitation to all Brooklynites to join us, donate, and spark change.

Hopefully you’ll see the campaign at Barclays Center and City Point, or on billboards and street pole banners around the borough, or at Bedford Avenue L in Williamsburg where we’re taking over every ad in the station! We’re also doing a number of events, including “Show Brooklyn Some Love Fest” at City Point with Brooklyn Bridge Parents on June 22nd from 11am-2pm. You won’t want to miss it!

The message of the campaign is simple: Brooklyn needs you. Our borough is home to countless exceptional, innovative nonprofit organizations working tirelessly to help our families, seniors, immigrants, and young people tackle big challenges like housing unaffordability, food insecurity, and systemic injustice. But despite being home to one-third of all NYC nonprofits, Brooklyn gets less than 8% of the funding (the vast majority still goes to Manhattan-based groups). Brooklyn deserves more – and it’s up to us as Brooklynites to do something about it. There are many ways to get involved, from memberships to events to starting your own charitable fund.
