Top 10 April family events in Brooklyn

Our April guide is filled with exciting, family-friendly events to enjoy this spring, from Easter egg hunts and Earth Day festivals to car-free Open Streets. Be sure to catch the cherry blossoms at Brooklyn Botanic Garden, opening day at Deno’s Wonder Wheel in Coney Island, amazing auto shows, and tasty weekends at Smorgasburg, returning for its 15th year!

1. Keff Joons Art Exhibition by CJ Hendry

Friday, April 11–Sunday, April 20 | 10am-5pm | Best for 8+ | FREE | Vinegar Hill

A free immersive art exhibit Keff Joons by artist CJ Hendry has popped up at 50 Gold Street in Vinegar Hill, with a surreal maze of larger-than-life balloon sculptures that visitors are encouraged to climb on, bounce, and play! Australian artist CJ Hendry is a local Brooklyn mom and also the founder of the wildly popular Space Club play spaces, with locations in Greenpoint and Fort Greene. All guests must remove their shoes, and grip socks are provided free of charge. You must also sign a wavier before exploring the exhibition. 2. Opening Day at Deno’s Wonder Wheel

Sunday, April 13 | 10am-6pm | FREE admission, $10 rides on the Wonder Wheel (first 105 guests ride for FREE!) | More ride pricing here | Coney Island

Deno’s Wonder Wheel Amusement Park, celebrating its 105th season in Coney Island, will kick off the season on Sunday, April 13 with its 40th Annual “Blessing of the Rides” at 10am. Following the blessing, the first 105 guests riding the iconic Wonder Wheel for free! The amusement park also has many kiddie rides, which will open at 11am, with adult rides opening at 12pm. Deno’s will be open on weekends only through May 18, then daily from May 23 through September 3, and on weekends and holidays from September 6 through October 26.

3. Celebrate Easter!

Whether you’re looking for a classic egg hunt in the park, a chance to meet the Easter Bunny, or creative arts and crafts activities for the little ones, Brooklyn has plenty of festive activities to make this Easter unforgettable.

  • Brooklyn Heights Easter Egg Hunt & Bake Sale
    Saturday, April 12 (Rain date: Sunday April 13) | 10:30am | Ages 0-3 at Harry Chapin Playground | Ages 4+ at Pierrepont Playground | FREE | Brooklyn Heights
    Brooklyn Heights Association‘s annual egg hunt will be held at two location this year: little bunnies 3 years and younger should report to Harry Chapin playground and children 4 years and older should head to Pierrepont Playground. The Egg Hunt begins at 10:30am SHARP! If you miss the eggs, you can still celebrate with our bake sale! Sign up here to contribute baked goods or work a one-hour volunteer shift.
  • BK Easter Egg Hunt for Kids on Fulton Street
    Saturday, April 12 | 1-4pm | $17.85/child | Clinton Hill
    Join us at 810 Fulton Street for an unforgettable Easter egg hunt experience. There will be an egg hunt with age-specific zone, face painting and crafts, special Easter Bunny photo op, kids’ music and games, sweet treats and snacks, and prizes!
  • BKLYN Easter Fest at CityPoint

    City Point and Brooklyn Bridge Parents will bring Easter Fest to Downtown BKLYN with kids DIY spring crafts, Easter Bunny #selfies, cookie decorating and games for ages 1 to 10. Saturday, April 19 from 11am to 1pm.
  • Egg Hunt in Brower Park
    Saturday, April 19 | 1-3pm | FREE | Crown Heights
    Bring your family and friends for a day of excitement as you search for colorful eggs hidden throughout the park. Get ready for games, activities, and maybe even a visit from the Easter Bunny! The hunt starts promptly at 1:30pm.
  • The Bunny Hop Family Disco at Friends of Firefighters
    Sunday, April 20 | 11am-3pm | $10/person for ages 2 and up and $35 for a family of four | Red Hook
    The Bunny Hop Family Disco is an event designed to bring families together for an afternoon of fun, laughter, and dancing. 4. Check out an epic car show

There are some amazing auto shows coming to Brooklyn and Manhattan this month:

  • New York Auto Show
    Friday, April 18–Sunday, April 27 | Monday–Thursday, 10am-8pm | Fridays & Saturdays, 10am-10pm, Sunday 10am-7pm | $22/adult, $8 children ages 3-12 | Javits Center | Hell’s Kitchen
    The New York Auto Show is celebrating their 125th anniversary this year. It has been held annually every year dating back to 1900, and was the first auto exhibition in North America. It is held at the Javits Convention Center in Manhattan, and will run through Sunday, April 27 (the show will be open on Easter Sunday!)
  • Wheels of NYC Car Show
    Sunday, April 19 | 12-6pm | $30 presale tickets, $35 at door, FREE for ages 12 and under  | Agger Fish Warehouse | Brooklyn Navy Yard 
    Join Wheels of NYC for their season opener, a classic car event that celebrates New York City’s vibrant automobile culture. This event is packed with vintage vehicles, live music, food, and drinks—an ideal afternoon for car enthusiasts and families. It’s the perfect setting for a family outing or a daytime date, with children under 12 admitted free of charge. Don’t miss out on this exciting event — advanced tickets are highly recommended.

5. Soak up cherry blossom season at Brooklyn Botanic Garden and beyond

Brooklyn Botanic Garden has some of Brooklyn’s best cherry blossom trees, and they’re just starting to bloom! Here’s all the ways to celebrate spring at BBG:

  • Use the Garden’s CherryWatch tracker to see when trees are in full bloom, and take advantage of the Garden’s extended hours this season. Starting April 1, BBG opens early Friday–Sunday: 8am-6pm and opens early and late Tuesday–Thursday: 8am-8pm. Admission is $22/adult, $16/students 12+ with ID, and free for children under 12. A portion of each day’s tickets are available free of charge to those who need them.
  • Get tickets for Hanami Nights, April 22–25. The cherry blossoms on Cherry Esplanade will be lit up for maximum effect. Try your hand at origami, and view a curated display of bonsai in the Lillian and Amy Goldman Atrium. Tickets sell out fast!
  • Weekends in Bloom, starting April 26, will feature pop-up music and dance performances, morning programming for kids and families in the Discovery Garden, and Garden tours.
  • During the week, bring your little ones to Spring First Discoveries, a program for the garden’s youngest patrons on Wednesday & Friday mornings.

6. Show the planet some love for Earth Day

  • Earth Day Celebration on Governors Island

    Governors Island’s Earth Day celebration will feature free activ­i­ties for all ages, includ­ing eco­log­i­cal stew­ard­ship, walk­ing tours, an Island-wide scav­enger hunt, seed­ball work­shops, a tree stamp­ing art activ­i­ty, cli­mate tech demos, DJ sets, com­mu­ni­ty sci­ence exhibits, and more.   • Earth Rocks! at Brooklyn Children’s Museum

  • Earth Day in Prospect Park

    Join Prospect Park Alliance and the NYC Bird Alliance this Earth Day for a day of celebrating our planet’s natural beauty and raising awareness about bird species that call it home through seasonal activities, crafts, nature walks and more.
  • Earth Day Festival in Brooklyn Bridge Park
    Saturday April 26 | 11am-2pm | FREE | Brooklyn Bridge Park
    Come to Emily Warren Roebling Plaza for our Earth Day Celebration! Highlights include: e-waste collection, an eco-art project, interactive exhibits by Earth Matters and Climate Families NYC, and live performances by Hill the Earth.
  • Earth Day Festival in Fort Greene Park
    Saturday April 26 | 11am-2pm | FREE | Fort Greene Park
    Spend a fun, family-friendly day in Fort Greene Park celebrating and caring for the earth. The festival features crafts, games, workshops, and sustainable swaps for all ages. Stay tuned for a full schedule of events here!
  • Volunteer for Earth Day at the KoKo Lot
    Saturday, April 26 | 1-4pm | Ages 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult | FREE | Greenwood Heights
    Join us on Saturday, April 26  at the KoKo Lot celebrate Earth Day! You’ll have the opportunity to use tools to help us take apart old projects, update the garden, clean and organize the space, and more! This is a great opportunity for curious neighbors and the families of KoKo kids to get acquainted with the Lot, our programming, our tools, and some of our team!
  • Invent & Imagine Earth Day Celebration at Atlantic Terminal
    Sunday, April 27 | 12-3pm | FREE | Downtown Brooklyn
    This Earth Day event at Atlantic Terminal will celebrate our planet and spark creativity in the name of sustainability! Build new inventions using recycled and found materials with KoKo NYC and get free books with at Brooklyn Book Bodega’s sustainable book giveaway.

7. Play on Brooklyn’s Open Streets on Car-Free Earth Day

Saturday, April 26 | Downtown Brooklyn, Boerum Hill, Williamsburg, and beyond

Car-Free Earth Day is an annual car-free event hosted by NYC’s Department of Transportation, with many participating locations in our neighborhoods, including Albee Square in Downtown Brooklyn, Hoyt Street in Boerum Hill, and Berry Street in Williamsburg.

  • Downtown Brooklyn Car-Free Earth Day in Albee Square
    Saturday April 26 | 11am-3:30pm | FREE | Downtown Brooklyn
    Join us for an exciting earth-friendly celebration at Albee Square Plaza and Albee Square West – which will be closed to traffic all day. Bring your bikes, scooters and roller skates and enjoy a car-free street! There will be workout classes, composting, sustainable art projects, free books, poetry writing, a live DJ, and much more!   • Car-Free Earth Day at Hoyt Open Streets
    Saturday April 26 | 11am-3pm | FREE | Boerum Hill
    Hoyt Open Streets will kick off their season of programming with car-free Earth Day on April 26. Drop by for live music, clothing mending by Expressive Repair, donate your e-waste, and check out a special art installation created just for our community and Hoyt Street. Bonus: free plants!
  • Car-Free Earth Day at Berry Street & South 4th Street
    Saturday April 26 | 10am-3pm | FREE | RSVP hereWilliamsburg
    Meet community groups, play games, learn, and make a greener North Brooklyn with us! There will be a yoga class run by Artful Souls & Wellness, a performance by Jody Sperling, plus classes by LEIMAY dance studio and East River Pilates. It will be a fun day for whole family! Sunday, April 27 | 7am-1pm | FREE to spectate | Greenpoint to Prospect Park

9. The Big Brooklyn Playdate at Central Library

Wednesday, April 30 | 10:30am-12:00pm | Ages 0-3 | FREE | Prospect Heights

Stop by the Big Brooklyn Playdate to enjoy fun games and activities that delight young children and encourage early literacy. Science Baby will be hosting the Toddler Zone featuring hands-on, active, sensory play with big STEM concepts for little kids. Come to play and leave ready to turn ordinary objects in your home into your child’s favorite toys. For babies and toddlers birth to 3 years and their parents and caregivers.

10. Taste something new at Smorgasburg, back for its 15 year! 

Saturdays, 11am-6pm | Marsha P. Johnson State Park | Williamsburg

Sundays, 11am-6pm | Breeze Hill | Prospect Park

Now in its 15th year, Smorgabsurg is back, running from April through October on Saturdays at Marsha P. Johnson Park in Williamsburg and Sundays at Breeze Hill in Prospect Park. This year, the food festival has over 70 stalls, including 20 new rookies. Newcomers this year include Jamaican Coco Bred, ancient Chinese dragon beard candy from Dragon Lulu, and pastrami sandwiches from Pastrami Underground out of Mill Basin, Brooklyn.
