Exciting news about library renovations across Brooklyn! The historic Bedford Library in Bed-Stuy has finally reopened after years of renovation. Meanwhile, the Carroll Gardens Library has secured a temporary location as the community awaits its delayed reopening. And in Fort Greene, a Pop-Up Walt Whitman Library is now open while the original branch undergoes renovations.
Bedford Library in Bed-Stuy reopens after 4-year renovation
The Bedford branch of the Brooklyn Public Library reopened in April after a four-year closure for a $2.4 million renovation. Bedford Library, located at 496 Franklin Avenue, has the distinction of being the oldest branch in the system, dating back to 1897. This most recent renovation included a new modern HVAC system, LED lighting, an improved elevator, new floors and windows, plus new shrubs, flowers and fresh grass outside. Carroll Gardens Library will open temporary location in July
This July, the Carroll Gardens Library will open a temporary location at 250 Baltic Street, which is currently an office space for Community Board 6. The main branch has been closed since July 2023 for major renovations, with its reopening now delayed until Summer 2026 due to unexpected complications. In response to community frustration, local officials urged BPL President Linda Johnson to find a solution. As a result, the temporary library will open four days a week: Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 1-5pm, and Friday from 10am-2pm. (The exact opening date in July has not been announced.) Patrons will be able to browse and borrow books, pick up holds, register for library cards, and get help from librarians. On Wednesdays, staff will offer mobile programming in the neighborhood, including storytimes, book clubs, and tech help. Details will be posted on the Carroll Gardens Library website. The 120-year-old main branch will reopen next summer with major upgrades, including new elevators, HVAC, lighting, bathrooms, and a dedicated teen space. The temporary branch will close about a month before the permanent location reopens.
