New amenities for families in our neighborhoods August ’25

Brooklyn is welcoming a wave of new family-friendly amenities, from the long-awaited reopening of the Red Hook Pool after summer repairs, the reopening of Leonard Library in Williamsburg, plus a new art supply store in Industry City, a kids’ dance studio in DUMBO, and a new music school in Greenpoint. And many more exciting openings are just around the corner, including new locations of Space Club and Ferox Ninja Park opening in DUMBO this fall!

But first, some news about family-friendly spots that are closing this month, but continuing on in new locations:

  • The art studio Private Picassos is closing their Park Slope location at 237 5th Avenue. They will now be based out of their Clinton Hill location, and they will also offer classes for babies, toddlers, and kids at 390 Social starting this fall (scroll down to learn more!). Celebrate their last day at their Closing Party on Friday, August 22 from 3-7pm. There will be free palette paintings, plus snacks and refreshments.
  • The indoor play space Carnaby Club has announced that they are closing their DUMBO location and moving to a new space, location TBA. They plan to offer more amenities for families in  a bigger space. They will remain open in DUMBO until September 1, and hope to be moved into the new space in October.

Red Hook Pool | Red Hook | NOW REOPENED

After being closed all summer, the Red Hook Pool finally reopened for swimming on August 17, and will remain open through the end of the season on September 7. The closure was due to a ruptured water line, discovered just days before the pool’s scheduled opening in late June. With repairs now complete, swimmers can enjoy the Olympic-sized pool daily from 11am to 7pm, with a cleaning break from 3 to 4pm. The city has also unveiled plans for a $122 million renovation of the pool and the recreation center, currently in the design phase, with construction expected to begin in 2028.

Red Hook Splash Pad | Red Hook | NOW OPEN

With the closure of the Red Hook Pool this summer, three splash pads were opened as an alternative cooling option in Red Hook. Opened on July 16, the spray showers will remain open daily from 10am-7pm through September 1. You can find them at the corner of Lorraine Street and Henry Street.

Hoops Klub | New location in Fort Greene | NOW OPEN

The indoor youth basketball hub Hoops Klub for ages 4 to 14 has opened a new gym in Fort Greene, located at 29 North Oxford Street. Hoops Klub offers after school programs, in-house leagues and games, afterschool programs, travel teams, girls-only teams, camps, and summer camps. Their new training facility is complete with indoor courts, seating for spectators, and a weight training area. Following its opening, Shaquille O’Neal even came by to check it out!

Leonard Library | Williamsburg | NOW REOPENED

The 120-year-old Leonard Library, located at 81 Devoe Street in Williamsburg, has reopened following a $4.8 million renovation that closed the branch for more than two years. The upgrades include a new roof, HVAC system, restored historic ceiling, plus upgraded lighting and interior finishes. The Leonard Library is the library featured in Betty Smith’s book A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, making it a designated a literary landmark. The library has resumed public programming for all ages, including story times, teen programs, adult groups, and more.

Slow Burn Ceramics | Gowanus | NOW OPEN

A new ceramics studio is now open at 65 15th Street in Gowanus. They offer handbuilding and wheel classes and workshops for adults, studio memberships, plus an after-school Clay Club for kids ages 8-11 on weekdays from 3:30-5:30pm. They will also have evening events like BYOB clay events, and will book private parties and classes. Learn more here!

Artist & Craftsman Supply | Industry City | NOW OPEN

A new art supply store has opened up in Industry City at 34 35th Street, in Building 4. They sell supplies for artists & crafters, from painting & sculpting to bookbinding & origami. Open 10am-8pm Monday through Friday and 10am-6pm Saturdays & Sundays. Take advantage of their Back-to-School sale, with 40% off select products through September 30! And celebrate their Grand Opening on Saturday, August 30, from 10am-6pm, with hands-on art demos, prizes and freebies, snacks, and more. 

Movement Room | Cobble Hill | NOW OPEN

The Movement Room is a new boutique fitness studio at 177 Court Street in Cobble Hill. They offer mat-based, 45-minute, low-impact classes designed to enhance strength, flexibility, and balance. For new parents, there is a Mama & Baby Movement class where you can BYOB: bring your own baby! Bring your baby, bouncer and blanket to class on Thursdays at 11am. Diva Dance | New location in Fort Greene | NOW OPEN

Diva Dance is a women-owned business offering adult dance choreography classes & parties in Brooklyn. Classes already take place at studios in Downtown Brooklyn (Brooklyn Ballet at 160 Schermerhorn St.), Park Slope (Dancewave at 182 4th Ave.), Flatbush (Balmir Dance at 2307 Snyder Ave.), and their newest location is in Fort Greene at Brooklyn School of Music (126 St. Felix St.). More information about the class schedule and memberships here.

New Nature Trails | Prospect Park | NOW OPEN

Prospect Park has unveiled its first formal nature trail system, featuring five routes that wind through 350 acres of woodlands and waterways, including Brooklyn’s last remaining upland forest, home to hundreds of native plants and wildlife. John Paul Jones Park | Bay Ridge | NOW REOPENED

John Paul Jones Park, also known as Cannonball Park, has reopened after being closed for improvements, including repaving of walking paths and installation of 1939 World’s Fair benches.

Spear | New location in Bay Ridge | NOW OPEN

The physical therapy center Spear has a new location in Bay Ridge, located at 455 86th Street. This is in addition to their other location in the neighborhood, at 3rd and 76th Street.

Pickleball at Atlantic Terminal | Downtown Brooklyn | Opening August 23, 2025

CityPickle is bringing two professional pickleball courts back to Atlantic Terminal in Downtown Brooklyn, starting the weekend of August 23 & 24 and running through November 2. They will be offering open play, beginner classes, kids clinics for ages 11-13, plus their 20s for $20 open play evenings. Browse all programs and reserve a court here!

Space Club | DUMBO | Opening October 2025

Space Club is set to open its third location at 256 Plymouth Street in DUMBO this October, offering kids of all ages a massive bead pit, a Magna-Tile pit, scarf-blowing machines, trampolines, a three-level playground with slides, a bedazzling room, multiple party rooms, a café, and—coming in 2026—a rooftop greenhouse. Membership sales are limited. Passes for non-members will cost $39 for two hours and cover one adult and one child. While after-school programs won’t launch until January 2026, members can secure their spot now for structured activities like homework help, arts and crafts, open play, and even school pick-up for kids in Pre-K through 6th grade. NY Kids Club | New location in Gowanus/Park Slope | Opening September 2025

NY Kids Club is opening a new school at 204 4th Avenue, on the ground floor of a new development in Park Slope/Gowanus. There will be two big classrooms, a 15-foot rock wall, and a sensory play gym with a trampoline. It will offer NY Preschool (ages 2-4), enrichment classes for 2 months up to 8 years, after-school programming with pick-up from other schools in the area, camps, birthday parties, PJ parties, open play, and more! They are hosting a free Summer Festival on Friday, August 22 through Sunday, August 24, with family events including a movie event and PJ party, plus sample classes! And mark your calendar for the Grand Opening on Saturday, September 20, with open play, rock climbing, face painting, a concert, family photos with a professional photographer, art projects, party favors, and more fun for ages 5 months to 8 years.

Greenpoint Academy of Music & Arts | Greenpoint | Opening September 1, 2025

A new music studio, the Greenpoint Academy of Music and Arts (GAMA), is opening its doors on September 1! GAMA will offer private and group lessons in guitar, drums, piano, vocals, and bass for kids, teens, and adults. Come explore the studio during their Grand Opening on Sunday, August 31, from 3-6pm at 45 Newell Street. There will be guided tours of the new space, activities for kids, live music, food and drink, and a chance to meet their instructors.

The Program NYC Youth Basketball Training Facility | Greenpoint | Opening September 2, 2025

The Program is a new state-of-the-art basketball training facility opening at 255 Java Street in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Spanning 12,500 square feet, it will feature regulation courts, weight and turf areas, a recovery room, a film room, and more for players ages 6-18. The Program is dedicated to developing young players through elite coaching and specialized training. Adults can also inquire about a program for players 18+. Brooklyn Basement Dance Company | DUMBO | Opening September 13, 2025

Brooklyn Basement Dance Company opens September 13 at 82 John Street in DUMBO, offering kids and teens (ages 5-18) dance training in Ballet, Jazz, Lyrical, Hip Hop, and Acrobatics. Programs include the Competition Program—5+ hours/week with three competitions and a year-end recital—and à la carte Dance Foundation classes, also ending with a recital. The 2,700 square-foot-studio has two rehearsal rooms, with classes Monday–Thursday starting at 4pm, plus on Saturday mornings. Ia’s Learning Tree | New location in Carroll Gardens | Opening September 2025

Ia’s Learning Tree already has various locations in Park Slope, South Slope, and Windsor Terrace, and they will be opening a new daycare center at 53 2nd Street in Carroll Gardens this September. The new center is located in a three-story brownstone, and the daycare will be on the first and second floors, complete with a large, beautiful backyard. Ia’s Learning Tree was founded by mother and daughter educators Ia and Teona, and the family-owned center offers care for infant and toddlers (12 weeks to 3 years), as well as full-day preschool programs for 2 and 3-year-olds. The infant program is capped at just 12 students. Curriculum is Montessori and Dewey-inspired, and extracurricular activities include music, Spanish, and yoga. Kuei Luck Early Childhood Center | Greenpoint | Opening September 2025 

Kuei Luck Early Childhood Center’s new Greenpoint Campus, located at 171 Calyer Street in Greenpoint, is now accepting pre-enrollment for Fall 2025 for children ages 6 months to 5 years. This Mandarin-immersion nursery and preschool embraces a Reggio Emilia-inspired, play-based curriculum designed to foster creativity, critical thinking, and a lifelong love of learning in a nurturing, child-centered environment. Brooklyn Basketball Training Center | Downtown Brooklyn | Opening September 2025

The Brooklyn Basketball Training Center by the Brooklyn Nets and New York Liberty, located just across the street from Barclays Center on Flatbush Avenue, will open its doors this fall. The 19,000 square foot facility will offer after-school and weekend programming, camps, birthday parties, clinics, and much more for kids ages 6 to 14.

Logicus Math School | Park Slope | Opening Fall 2025

Logicus, a K–12 after-school math enrichment program, is opening its second location this fall in Park Slope. Logicus offers small-group classes (up to six students) built around a rigorous, logic-based curriculum inspired by Russian and Singapore math traditions. The program supports students from early elementary through high school, emphasizing problem-solving, number sense, and collaborative learning. Ferox Ninja Park | DUMBO | Opening Fall 2025

Ferox, the indoor ninja park based out Greenpoint, is opening a new location at 65 Jay Street in DUMBO this fall. The 5,000 square-foot space will be a smaller gym than the Greenpoint location, but will be equipped with a trampoline area, climbing walls, plus ninja warrior courses and more! They will offer drop-in play, after-school classes, birthday parties, and more.

Private Picassos Classes at 390 Social | Park Slope | Launching Fall 2025

Private Picassos’ Park Slope studio is closing their doors this summer, but several of their fall classes will continue downstairs at the neighboring 390 Social, located at 390 5th Avenue. Classes at this location include the Art Playgroup for Babies (12–18 months), Toddler Art Class (1.5–4 years), Tigers, Lions & Bears, Oh My! (4–6 years), and Wearable Art Class (2nd–5th grade). Sessions run 45–60 minutes for structured classes led by a Private Picassos Art Teacher, and 45 minutes for self-led Art Playgroups, with a maximum of 10 kids per class.

Pure Barre | New location in Downtown Brooklyn | Opening Fall 2025

Pure Barre, the popular fitness franchise known for workouts that combine yoga, Pilates, and ballet, is set to open a new 1,517-square-foot studio at the base of 11 Hoyt, a 57-story condominium tower in Downtown Brooklyn, by the end of 2025.

Darling Children’s Shop | Brooklyn Heights | Opening November 2025

A new children’s shop is coming to 149 Atlantic Avenue in November 2025. Darling will carry handmade and vintage children’s clothing, gifts, and accessories sourced globally and from New York. Stay tuned for an opening date!

Velto Pickleball Club | Red Hook | Opening January 2026

Velto Pickleball Club will opening in January 2026 on the second floor of the Tesla Building at 160 Van Brunt Street in Red Hook, occupying 14,000 square feet with four full-size courts, a half-court, mezzanine lounge, and smoothie bar. The membership-based club is investing over $1 million in high-end finishes to create a destination for local players.

The Green-House at Green-Wood Cemetery | Greenwood Heights | Opening Spring 2026

A new greenhouse and education center is coming to Green-Wood Cemetery in Spring 2026. The facility will be a community space for public programs, a mini-museum, a setting for research and education, and more. It will be  located right across the street from the Main Entrance at 25th Street and Fifth Avenue, and will combine the restored Victorian-era Weir Greenhouse with a new building and serve as a central hub. It will have a visitor welcome area, classroom for 3K-12th Grade, a restored historic greenhouse space, two exhibition galleries, a Center for Research, storage for archival documents, restrooms, and staff offices. All will be welcome, and admission will be free.

The Beginning Clubhouse | Brooklyn Heights | Opening Summer 2026

Opening Summer 2026, The Beginning Clubhouse will bring a 45,000-square-foot family club to Brooklyn Heights at 50 Columbia Heights, across from Hillside Dog Park. The club will feature supervised childcare, play spaces, game rooms, and classes, plus a full floor for parents with a work lounge, meeting rooms, and a quiet library. Amenities include a fitness center, spa, and multiple dining options—from a café and fine dining restaurant to an adults-only dining room and a rooftop with skyline views. Century Marketplace | Bay Ridge | Opening date TBA

The former Century 21 building at 86th Street in Bay Ridge has been sold for $47.5 million will be redeveloped into Century Marketplace, a 95,000-square-foot, grocery-anchored retail complex. The $100 million project will include a new two-story building with an interior atrium and street-level retail. Century 21 filed for bankruptcy during the pandemic, and the building has sat vacant for five years. Retailers will be announced soon, and construction is anticipated to start in late 2025.

Elevators at Smith-9th Street Subway Station | Gowanus | Opening date TBA

Smith–9th Street in Gowanus, the city’s tallest subway station at 90 feet above ground, is finally getting elevators. Without escalators, accessibility has long been a challenge at this stop, making the new elevators a welcome and much-needed upgrade. No completion date has been announced for this project—stay tuned!
