Free kid-friendly events this week in Brooklyn (6/22-6/28)

Whether you are looking to watch the World Cup, celebrate Pride, or see an outdoor movie this week, there are plenty of options! Your family can also read to a dog in Brooklyn Heights, stop by a Stitch day party in Gravesend, participate in Drag Queen Kids Story Time in Downtown Brooklyn, attend a Puppetworks celebration in Sunset Park, dance & drum at Caribbean Heritage Family Day in Prospect Park, and much more!

MONDAY

Free Admission Days at the Pier 2 Roller Skating Rink | Brooklyn Bridge Park

Mondays & Fridays | 3:30pm-6:00pm | FREE admission but skate rental is $8 and skate mate rental is $6

Come to the Pier 2 Roller Skating Rink for some free family fun and exercise. Enjoy the fresh air and gorgeous views as you skate around the rink.

 

TUESDAY

Tot Time Tuesdays | Shirley Chisholm State Park

Tuesdays | 10:00am-11:30am | Ages 2-5, but all are welcome

Come to the Hendrix Creek Patio for a fun morning of toddler-friendly activities, including crafts, storytime at 10:30am and a hike at 11:00am.

Read with a Dog | Brooklyn Heights

Tuesday, June 23rd | 4:00pm-5:00pm | Children ages 5-12 practicing their reading skills

Join the Brooklyn Heights Library in their Craft Room to practice reading to their guest pup! Kids can make enormous strides in building self-esteem and confidence while acquiring a love of books. Sign up at the Children’s Reference desk for a 15 minute slot on the day of the program. First come, first served. Sign ups begin at 3:00. Space is limited to 3 children per time slot.

New Mom Meet Up at Fontainhas | DUMBO

Tuesdays | 4:30pm-6:00pm

Bring your baby to Fontainhas for some cozy chai and hang with other new moms. Hosted every week by the new mom pop-up POST.

 

WEDNESDAY

Storytime in the Park | Fort Greene

Wednesdays in May-October | 11:00am

Sing, read, and play with librarians from Walt Whitman Library in Fort Greene Park! Have fun hearing great picture books read aloud and playing with other children during this program. For children of all ages and their caregivers. This program will be located at the bottom of the Monument stairs near Myrtle Playground and runs on Wednesdays at 11:ooam-11:45am from May 13th-October 14th.

Free Admission at New York Aquarium | Coney Island

Wednesdays | 3:00pm-6:00pm | Reserve tickets here; free tickets are made available at 3pm the Monday before

Take advantage of free admission hours at the New York Aquarium from 3:00-6:00pm on Wednesdays. Note that advance timed tickets are required (max of 4 per group); the Wednesday Afternoon Ticket Store will open on Monday at 3:00pm for that Wednesday’s reservations.

Teen Time: Pride Month Party! | Dyker Heights

Wednesday, June 24th | 4:00pm-5:00pm | For teens in grades 6-12

Come to the McKinley Park library to celebrate LGBTQIA+ Pride Month! Participants will create personalized keychains and bookmarks and have Pride themed books, stickers and bracelet giveaways!

Movies Under the Stars: The Lego Movie | Bay Ridge

Wednesday, June 24th | 8:30pm-10:30pm

Grab a blanket and come enjoy a movie in a neighborhood park or playground! This summer, NYC Parks and The Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment will host family-friendly movie showings across the five boroughs. Come watch The LEGO Movie at the Fort Hamilton Athletic Field as it follows Emmet, an ordinary, rules-following, perfectly average LEGO minifigure who is mistakenly identified as the most extraordinary person (the MasterBuilder) and the key to saving his LEGO world.

Calling all parents and caregivers with children! Join a Prospect Park Alliance Naturalist for a leisurely stroll along Prospect Park’s waterways. Embrace the sound of streams and songs of birds, while enjoying fragrant flowers and the towering trees of Brooklyn’s Backyard. Please note that this walk leaves promptly at 10:00am the Prospect Park Boathouse.

Nature Exploration: Pollinator Month | Prospect Park

Thursday, June 25th | 10:00am-3:00pm 

Join Prospect Park Alliance for family-friendly nature fun as we explore the question “What is a pollinator?” with park naturalists. There will be activities about butterflies, animals, and nature!

International Stitch Day Celebration! | Gravesend

Thursday, June 25th | 3:00pm-4:00pm | Activities are recommended for children 4 and up as some contain small parts

Come to the Highlawn Library to celebrate everyone’s favorite alien, Stitch (aka Experiment 626)! They will have  Stitch face painting, coloring pages, and a display of the many Stitch books they have at the library. There will also be a secret prize for attendees while supplies last!

BEATS and BONDS: Drumming Together as a Family | Bed-Stuy

Join Industry City, brooklynONE productions, and Puppetworks for a special community celebration honoring one of Brooklyn’s most beloved cultural institutions as it prepares to begin an exciting new chapter at Industry City. For nearly 50 years, Puppetworks has inspired generations of children and families through the magic of marionette theatre, imaginative storytelling, and arts education. As the organization prepares to relocate to its new home at Industry City, this unique event will celebrate both its remarkable legacy and its bright future. The day begins with a family-friendly celebration featuring interactive puppet activities, creative workshops, hands-on crafts, special displays, and opportunities to meet Puppetworks artists and performers. Children and families will have the chance to explore the artistry behind puppetry and experience the wonder that has made Puppetworks a treasured part of Brooklyn’s cultural landscape. In the evening, guests are invited to a special reception featuring wine and light refreshments, community storytelling, special presentations, a live puppet performance, and an exclusive preview of Puppetworks’ future theatre and educational space. Attendees will also be invited to share their own memories as part of What Puppetworks Means to Me, a community storytelling initiative preserving the organization’s legacy for future generations.

Calling all caregivers and young children – join for Storytime with Brooklyn Public Library on Friday afternoons in June and July! Librarians from Brooklyn Public Library’s Adams St and Brooklyn Heights branches will join to lead storytime each week. Bring a blanket, some snacks, and enjoy a relaxing late afternoon in the shade of Pier 1’s The Vale Lawn.

Movies Under the Stars: Hoppers | Bath Beach

Grab a blanket and come enjoy a movie in a neighborhood park or playground! This summer, NYC Parks and The Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment will host family-friendly movie showings across the five boroughs. Come to Bensonhurst Park to watch animal lover Mabel use clever new technology designed to “hop” human consciousness into lifelike robotic animals to communicate with beavers, uncovering mysteries within the animal world beyond anything she could have imagined.
