Department of Education expects further enrollment decline in public schools in our neighborhoods

New school budgets and projected enrollment for public schools for next school year have been published by the Department of Education. A 4% decline is projected for all the schools below in District 13 and 15 after taking a big hit this school year of – 14%. In recent times, these projections have been optimistic, hence the decline could be ending up well below -4%. This development has allowed schools that have not taken out of zone students for Kindergarten in the past like PS 8 to enroll out of zone students leaving under-enrolled schools even more in limbo.

New York City public school enrollment declines have accelerated during COVID and continue to do so with the unaffordability of the City, inflation and quality of life issues and the move of families to Charter and independent schools. Read more here what the enrollment decline means for the schools budgets.
