In the months leading up to the celebration, local youth interviewed Brooklyn elders who remember the original festival, then transformed those stories into a playful puppet pageant for the whole community.

Join the filmmakers of Echoes of Incarceration at the Bedford Library for an evening of youth-produced films exploring the impact of mass incarceration on young people. Since 2009, Echoes has trained teens and young adults directly impacted by the criminal legal system in filmmaking and advocacy, creating documentaries and video journalism in partnership with organizations including Sesame Street, Upworthy, and NowThis News, with screenings at the White House and the U.S. Department of Justice. This program will feature recent work focused on restorative practices, Emerging Adult Justice, and a new series examining how communities can build safety beyond traditional policing. A conversation with the filmmakers will follow the screening.

During the 2026 season, the PuppetMobile will present a fresh take on the classic fairytale Pinocchio written by Julia Darden and directed by Bruce Cannon, with set design by Zlata Godunova and costume design by Charlie DelRisco. In this new telling, Geppetto is a New York City kid with a talent for invention, going as far as creating a robot friend in the form of Pinocchio. The story follows the pair as they tour around classic locales, from the Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre in Central Park to the Victorian Gardens Amusement Park, and the hijinks they get into along the way. This performance will take place at Sunset Park.

Youth Basketball Clinics | Brooklyn Bridge Park

Kids can join Brooklyn Bridge Park for free basketball clinics led by KING Hoops, NYC’s premier youth basketball organization. Participants can learn basketball basics as head coaches lead participants through drills and games. Free clinics are held on Saturday mornings from June through August (excluding holiday weekends). The first hour, 9:00am-10:00am, will be for beginner players who are brand new to the sport. Here children will learn the very basic fundamentals of the game, the rules of the game, and getting acclimated to having a ball in each player’s hands. The second hour, 10:00am-11:00am, will be for advanced beginners to intermediate players who have played a little bit more basketball experience. Emphasis will be on ball handling, passing, shooting form, defense, and learning to love the game. This event is rain or shine. It is recommended to bring your own ball. Advanced registration and fitness waivers are required, although walk-up registrations can be accommodated as space allows. Registration is by-the-week and dates open at start of the month. Capacity will be limited to 45 participants per age group.

Storytime with Artie Bennett reading The Tenth Man: A Miracle of Jewish Faith and Friendship in New Orleans

Join author Artie Bennett at Lofty Pigeons Books for a reading of his new book. The Tenth Man tells the true story of a young man, Alex Brown, racked with grief and guilt over the loss of his Old World grandfather. In a tailspin, he stumbles upon what he perceives to be an abandoned synagogue. But when he hears faint singing emanating from within, he is drawn to investigate. After knocking on the door, he is greeted by an elderly congregant, one of nine Holocaust survivors keeping the synagogue afloat, who pulls him inside as a buzz, “The tenth man, the tenth man,” echoes through the shul. (In Orthodox tradition, a quorum of ten men is required to read from the Torah and to say certain prayers, such as Kaddish for deceased loved ones.) Alex stays with these men for the next six-plus years, developing deep friendships and helping to revitalize the shul. And, ultimately, he sees each of these men on their final journey.
