Meet Katie Vermilyea, the newest addition to the team at Adams Street Library. Katie is the YA Librarian responsible for new programming for teens and tweens in DUMBO. One of the library’s new programs is Tween Book Club, where tweens are invited to pick each month’s book and read in either novel or graphic novel format. Other programs include Anime Afternoon for Grades 5-12 and Brooklyn Robotics League for ages 9-17, which will culminate in a big competition at Central Library in 2025. Mark your calendars for these upcoming sessions:
- Anime Afternoon for Grades 5-12 | Wednesday, September 25 | 4-5pm | Meets every other Wednesday
- Brooklyn Robotics League for ages 9-17 | Thursday, October 3 | 4:00-5:30pm | Weekly workshops leading up to 2025 competition

In addition to running these programs, Katie also gives customized book recommendations to young readers!
Your job title: YA Librarian
Your work in one sentence: Making libraries a place where tweens, teens, and emerging adults have a welcoming place to be.
What do you love about Brooklyn? Our community of people who are passionate about Brooklyn’s history, art, and culture—and the great coffee. Usagi and Fontainhas are two favorites.
What made you want to become a librarian? After spending the majority of my career in corporate learning and development, I made the switch as a means of both fulfilling a longtime personal goal and contributing to a community that fosters learning and curiosity at all ages.
More information about programming for tweens and teens at Adams Street Library: Our fall schedule includes anime watch parties, a monthly tween book club, and the return of Brooklyn Robotics League! We are also piloting dedicated Teen Coworking Spaces for study, collab, and college prep. I’m also excited to be hosting a drop-in Craft Circle for adults on Tuesday evenings.
