Tweens and teens have lots of fun events to choose from this month! Whether it’s competing in a basketball video game tournament in Bed-Stuy or Prospect Heights, birding in Prospect Park, joining a book club in Fort Greene or DUMBO, going to the New York Liberty home opener in Prospect Heights, listening to music at BKCM’s Open Stages across Park Slope, dancing at Brooklyn Bridge Parents’ DUMBO Dance Party, watching a sumo tournament at Industry City in Sunset Park, flying a kite in Brooklyn Bridge Park, seining in Marine Park, or making art in Fort Greene, the fun doesn’t stop this May!

It is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month! Let’s celebrate with Rangoli art from India. Rangoli is made using colorful sand and rice flour to make flower designs for good luck.

Young Adult Book Group at Greenlight Bookstore | Fort Greene

Led by Greenlight bookseller Micah, the YA Book Group is a space for the curious young reader interested in a curated, intentionally diverse and broad selection of books. While literature is of course at the core of this book group, cultivating community and connections are also at the root of YABG, so if this sounds like a good time to you, come join the fun! For May, the group discusses Nothing Burns as Bright as You, from New York Times bestselling author Ashley Woodfolk—an impassioned stand-alone tale of queer love, grief, and the complexity of female friendship. Two girls. One wild and reckless day. Years of tumultuous history unspooling like a thin, fraying string in the hours after they set a fire. Over the course of a single day, the depth of their past, the confusion of their present, and the unpredictability of their future is revealed. And the girls will learn that hearts, like flames, aren’t so easily tamed. Pizza will be provided.

Filmmaking Workshop with Echoes of Incarceration at the Bedford Library | Bed-Stuy

Join the award-winning youth filmmakers of Echoes of Incarceration for a hands-on, peer-led documentary workshop. Led by young people directly impacted by the criminal justice system, Echoes creates films that center lived experience and challenge dominant narratives about youth and punishment. Participants will step into a multi-camera interview setup, learn the basics of documentary interviewing, and explore how storytelling can be used as a tool for advocacy and change. Through guided prompts and collaborative filming, attendees will have the opportunity to conduct interviews and share stories. Open to teens and young adults. No prior filmmaking experience required.

NBA 2K26 at the Central Library | Prospect Heights

Come to the 2nd annual NBA 2K26 Tournament for your chance to win fun prizes. The tournament will run throughout the month of May, taking place once a week on Thursdays 4:30pm-6:00pm at the Central branch Upper Youth Wing room. The playoff and championship will be held at the Brooklyn Heights Branch on June 6th, 2026.

Brooklyn Conservatory of Music’s Open Stages is a neighborhood-wide, free music festival with stages all over Park Slope, and a celebration of Brooklyn’s vibrant music scene. Open Stages takes place rain or shine, and all best efforts will be made to keep the music going regardless of weather. The festival is free and open to everyone, but it’s also a fundraiser that supports music education and therapy for over 7,000 New Yorkers of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds across the five boroughs. If you’re able to make a contribution with your RSVP, every dollar makes a difference!

Led by Greenlight staff member Megan, the Tween Grade Book Group is geared toward kids ages 9 to 12, reading and discussing great contemporary and classic chapter books. Pizza is served! For May, the group discusses The Last Hope School for Magical Delinquents by Nicki Pau Preto, a magic school fantasy perfect for fans of The School for Good and Evil and Witchlings! After years of detention, suspension, and expulsion from magic schools far and wide, Lavinia “Vin” Lucas is out of control and out of options. Sent to the Last Hope School for Magical Delinquents, Vin is determined to behave. Watch your kite soar above the city skyline – this is the one day of the year you can fly a kite at Brooklyn Bridge Park! Decorate your own free kite to take home (while supplies last), borrow a kite to fly, or bring your own to show off! Enjoy live music, crafts, games, and activities from local partners at this family-friendly event. Learn and celebrate global origins of kite flying and kite making from international community partners.

Photoville Festival Opening Weekend at Brooklyn Bridge Park | DUMBO

To celebrate the opening of the festival, Photoville will present a free Community Weekend (May 16 and 17), a visual storytelling event bringing various artists to Brooklyn Bridge Park, featuring 65 exhibitions and free public programming from VSCO, the Penumbra Foundation, Doctors Without Borders, Creatively Wild, and Cynthia Santos Briones. As you take in all the festivities, relax at the Leica Camera Lounge, or grab a bite at Smorgasburg’s pop-up. Join on opening night, Saturday May 16, for Boroughs In Focus, a special presentation of photos projected on the Brooklyn Bridge featuring photo collections highlighting New York’s five unique boroughs from over 35 photographers. Photoville will be on display until May 30th!

Calling all young journalists! Now’s your shot to write for the Clinton Hill Library’s very own newspaper Clinton Hill Teen Quarterly! Would you like to learn how to pitch an article, write for a newspaper, conduct interviews, and see your work in print? Join the Clinton Hill Library and reporter Elsie Carson-Holt  for a lesson on how to pitch for and write a newspaper article. Then write your own and they will compile them into the next issue of CHTQ. Registration is limited and required.

Outdoor Sketchbooking at Brooklyn Bridge Park | DUMBO

Do you like to sketchbook? Are you interested in starting? Join Brooklyn Bridge Park educators and other like-minded people in a sketchbooking meet-up. Each time, the group will meet at a different location in the park to concentrate on different subjects and stretch our skills. Come to one event or come to all. It’s up to you. These are informal sessions with some instruction for those who are new to the practice as well as an open exchange of ideas, techniques, and materials. This month the group will be exploring the John Street section of the park and concentrating on architecture (the NYC skyline, the Manhattan Bridge, etc). Meeting point will be at the Manhattan Bridge viewing area, near the salt marsh.
