Free kid-friendly events this week in Brooklyn (6/8-6/14)

Families across Brooklyn have plenty of fun events to check out this week, including outdoor storytimes in Downtown Brooklyn & Fort Greene, stroller walks in Prospect Park, a chance to snap a pic with the U.S. Open trophy in Downtown Brooklyn, a Juneteenth party in Fort Greene, a disc golf event and bike riding class on Governors Island, Pride celebrations in Park Slope, a phones down picnic in Red Hook, a Caribbean Festival in Prospect Park, the Puerto Rican Parade & Festival in Sunset Park, and much more!

MONDAY

Youth Birding | Prospect Park

Monday, June 8th | 3:30pm-5:00pm | Ages 6-19 

Join the Central Library’s Librarians for Youth Birding in Prospect Park. Learn more about native birds and their habitat, borrow a pair of children’s binoculars, and enjoy the great outdoors of Prospect Park! Meet at the north entrance of the park off of Flatbush Ave. near the King David’s Breakfast Taco Truck.

Exploring Ancient Myths | Clinton Hill

Monday, June 8th | 3:30pm-4:30pm | Ages 5-10

Participants will enjoy an interactive reading of an ancient Greek or Roman myth, followed by a related art activity, at the Clinton Hill Library.

Free Admission Days at the Pier 2 Roller Skating Rink | Brooklyn Bridge Park

Mondays & Fridays | 3:30pm-6:00pm | FREE admission but skate rental is $8 and skate mate rental is $6

Come to the Pier 2 Roller Skating Rink for some free family fun and exercise. Enjoy the fresh air and gorgeous views as you skate around the rink.

 

TUESDAY

Kids Create: Dream Journeys | Bed-Stuy

Tuesday, June 9th | 3:30pm-4:30pm

Take this journey together, as participants collaborate through a story-quilting and collage-making workshop intertwining dreams, challenges, and embarking on liberation world-building through creative Afrofuturism. Using various textures, materials, quotes and ideas about community, create a bridge of creative action toward individual and collective power. This workshop will be led by teaching artist, Wéma Ragophala in collaboration with Bridges: A Pan- African ARTS Movement at the Bedford Library.

Drag Story Hour | Brooklyn Heights

Tuesday, June 9th | 3:30pm-4:30pm

Come celebrate LGBTQ+ Pride Month at the Brooklyn Heights Library! They will be joined by several fabulous drag performers from Drag Story Hour NYC to read, sing, and encourage confidence and individuality. DSH gives kids a chance to see people who defy rigid gender expectations and imagine a world where everyone can be their authentic selves!

New Mom Meet Up at Fontainhas | DUMBO

Bring your baby to Fontainhas for some cozy chai and hang with other new moms. Hosted every week by the new mom pop-up POST.

Join the Brooklyn Heights Library for Outdoor Storytime at Cadman Park. They will be singing songs and reading stories on the grass right next to the Juneteenth Grove.

Storytime in the Park | Fort Greene

Wednesdays in May-October | 11:00am

Sing, read, and play with librarians from Walt Whitman Library in Fort Greene Park! Have fun hearing great picture books read aloud and playing with other children during this program. For children of all ages and their caregivers. This program will be located at the bottom of the Monument stairs near Myrtle Playground and runs on Wednesdays at 11:ooam-11:45am from May 13th-October 14th.

Wednesday Wonders with Flow Juggle | Downtown Brooklyn

Enjoy the wonders of Abolitionist Place – where three Wednesdays in June offers a new adventure with Brooklyn’s favorite juggler, Martin Kalwill, aka Flow Juggle! Whether you’re a total beginner or looking to up your juggling game, Martin has tips and tricks for all. All skill levels are welcome and equipment will be provided.

Take advantage of free admission hours at the New York Aquarium from 3:00-6:00pm on Wednesdays. Note that advance timed tickets are required (max of 4 per group); the Wednesday Afternoon Ticket Store will open on Monday at 3:00pm for that Wednesday’s reservations.

Calling all parents and caregivers! Join a Prospect Park Alliance Naturalist for a leisurely stroll along Prospect Park’s waterways. Embrace the sound of streams and birdsongs, and enjoy the fragrant flowers and towering trees of Brooklyn’s Backyard. Please note that this walk leaves promptly at 10:00am from the Boathouse.

Sing with Suzi in the Park | Park Slope

Award-winning NYC climate-rocker and puppeteer, Esther Crow, uses puppets, original music, and environmental story books in this fun and interactive program. This event will take place at the Clinton Hill Library.

Cross-Country U.S. Open Trophy Tour | Downtown Brooklyn

Grab a blanket and come enjoy a movie in a neighborhood park or playground! This summer, NYC Parks and The Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment will host family-friendly movie showings across the five boroughs. The first authorized and official film about professional soccer player Cristiano Ronaldo. It is rated PG-13, please consider if this is appropriate for younger children. This event takes place at Bush Terminal Park.

Juneteenth Party with Brown Babies n’ Books! | Fort Greene

Greenlight’s annual Juneteenth event, highlighting Black creatives and topics that directly impact Black livelihood, is back for its fourth year! This year, they are hosting their first kids-focused event, celebrating the work of several Black children’s book authors and illustrators with a family-friendly evening of reading, arts and crafts, food and fun! Award-winning author and poet Zetta Elliot headlines with a Story Time of her new book A Song for Juneteenth, an emotional and lyrical picture book that celebrates the importance of Juneteenth as well as the resilience of Black families and the power of community. Following the reading, award-winning artist Jonell Joshua leads an interactive arts and crafts activity for kids and adults to enjoy! Free drinks and refreshments from Black-owned Brooklyn businesses Jaylee’s Treats and Happy Cork are served, and a portion of proceeds from all purchases on June 12 will be donated to Brown Babies n’ Books, a Brooklyn-based, community-driven literacy nonprofit dedicated to building legacy through literacy, representation, and community.

Movies Under the Stars: The Spongebob Movie: Search for Squarepants | Bay Ridge

Grab a blanket and come enjoy a movie in a neighborhood park or playground! This summer, NYC Parks and The Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment will host family-friendly movie showings across the five boroughs. The Spongebob Movie will be showing in Shore Road Park at 79th Street. Hoping to prove his bravery to Mr. Krabs, SpongeBob follows a mysterious, swashbuckling ghost pirate known as the Flying Dutchman on a seafaring adventure that takes him to the deepest depths of the ocean.

The Fly Off Course Open | Governors Island

Saturday, June 13th | 9:00am-5:00pm | FREE, but can also sign up and pay for competitive options here

A one-day disc golf event on Governors Island featuring a custom 18-hole course built inside the moat of Fort Jay, with Manhattan skyline and Statue of Liberty views. Two tracks run simultaneously all day: a free open play doubles format open to everyone, and a competitive doubles tournament run by NYCDGA with prizes and an award ceremony. Discs are free to borrow, no experience required, and the course exists for one day only.

Free Learn to Ride Classes with Blazing Saddles on Governors Island

There’s no better place to learn how to ride a bike than scenic Governors Island! Blazing Saddles’ free Learn to Ride classes are open to most ages and designed to help beginners build confidence in a safe, supportive environment. Classes are offered on select Saturday mornings from June through September.

BRIC partners with The Center for Fiction for an eclectic afternoon of family fun, culture, and music. Multigenerational crowd-pleaser DJ Marc Bars spins an adventurous mix of pop, hip-hop, and classic party anthems. The Brooklyn Conservatory of Music presents talented local players as accompaniment to a bilingual live reading of Katie Yamasaki‘s picture book, Mural Island. Godfathers of the Brooklyn Afrobeat scene, Antibalas will get the whole family dancing, closing out the evening with their infectious horn-driven jams.

Annual Brooklyn Pride Twilight Parade | Park Slope

Capping off a full slate of events on Brooklyn Pride Day, the Brooklyn Pride Twilight Parade will take place along Fifth Avenue from Lincoln Place and Eighth Street. The only evening parade in the Northeast, the street will be filled with organizations showing up to march in support of the amazing and vibrant LGBTQIA+ community.

The Good+Foundation will host their 2nd Annual Daddy Summer Stroll in partnership with The Prospect Park Alliance at the LeFrak Center at Parkside, Prospect Park: a family-focused event celebrating fathers and caregivers through music, hands-on activities, and time together outdoors. The Stroll reflects a core part of Good+’s work—championing a father-inclusive approach to strengthening families through experiences that are joyful, dignified, and grounded in community. More than a parade, it is a living expression of Puerto Rican identity, resilience, and consciousness in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, keeping our histories, traditions, and spirit alive for generations to come.
