A look inside Brooklyn Rise Charter School in Downtown Brooklyn

Brooklyn RISE, a K to 5th Grade Charter School has moved from Sunset Park to Downtown Brooklyn this school year offering an academically challenging inclusivity model of learning with 40% of students English Language Learners and 20 – 25% of students with IEPs. The impressive Inclusive Learning Department consists of a director of Inclusive Learning, Special Education Coordinator, Multi Language Learner Coordinator, Behavior Specialist and two social workers. The team works daily to adjust the learning experience to the individual needs of students with small group work, pull-outs, hands-on learning and many other tools.

There are two daily enrichment classes 4x per week rotating per semester between either art and music or science and dance. The school also features a maker’s room for creative learning, STEM activities and recess. In-house speech, physical and occupational therapy are offered for kids with IEPs.

Brooklyn Rise currently has 210 students enrolled with the capacity for up to 300 students in the building. Every grade has 2 classes, 26 students each with 2 teachers, a 13:1 student to teacher ratio. They offer a fee-based after school program for all students until 6.30 pm. School hours are Monday to Thursday: 8:15 am- 4:15 pm and Friday: 8:15 am- 1:30 pm. For recess they close Hanover Place within the Open Streets program, use the indoor recess room or go to nearby parks.

62% of students at Brooklyn Rise passed the ELA tests and Math tests last year.
