Things for tweens & teens to do June ’26

Tweens and teens can look forward to an exciting June! There are many opportunities to watch and play sports – whether learning at a basketball clinic in Brooklyn Bridge Park, watching soccer or playing disc golf on Governors Island, attending Brooklyn Bridge Parents’ Kids’ Soccer Village & Watch Party in Downtown Brooklyn, snapping a pic with the U.S. Open Trophy in Downtown Brooklyn, or even learning NBA 2K26 tips and tricks at the Paley Museum in Manhattan. Tweens and teens can also attend book groups and author visits in Fort Greene, Kensington, Greenpoint, and Brooklyn Heights. Comic loving teens can attend events in Brooklyn or Staten Island. There are also many ways to celebrate Pride and Juneteenth in Fort Greene, Greenpoint, Brooklyn Heights, Bed-Stuy, and Sunset Park. Families also will not want to miss the phones down picnic in Red Hook!

Young Adult Book Group at Greenlight Bookstore | Fort Greene

Led by Greenlight bookseller Micah, the YA Book Group is a space for the curious young reader interested in a curated, intentionally diverse and broad selection of books. While literature is of course at the core of this book group, cultivating participants very own community and connections are also at the root of YABG, so if this sounds like a good time to you, come join the fun! For June, the group discusses the National Book Award Winner Brown Girl Dreaming by acclaimed author Jacqueline Woodson. In mesmerizing poems, teeming with feeling and deeply personal, Brown Girl Dreaming is the groundbreaking chronicle of Woodson’s childhood, her journey to storytelling, and a beautiful portrayal of physical, emotional, and spiritual growth. Pizza will be provided.

Bee Hives, Lip Balms, and Honey Tasting for Teens at the Greenpoint Library | Greenpoint

Interested in learning about bees, honey, and hives? Join the Greenpoint Library and Environmental Education Center alongside Bee U NYC with bee experts and enthusiasts for a live hive demonstration, honey tasting, and lip balm making workshop. This program will be held in both the Demonstration Garden and Teen Zone (Eco Lab 3). There will be live bees, please be mindful of your allergies and needs, and be mindful of the bees’ needs, too. They recommend bringing hats, sunglasses, sunscreen, and bringing a water bottle as it can get warm and sunny on the rooftop.

Film Screening with Echoes of Incarceration at the Bedford Library | Bed-Stuy

Join the filmmakers of Echoes of Incarceration for an evening of youth-produced films exploring the impact of mass incarceration on young people. Since 2009, Echoes has trained teens and young adults directly impacted by the criminal legal system in filmmaking and advocacy, creating documentaries and video journalism in partnership with organizations including Sesame Street, Upworthy, and NowThis News, with screenings at the White House and the U.S. Department of Justice. This program will feature recent work focused on restorative practices, Emerging Adult Justice, and a new series examining how communities can build safety beyond traditional policing. A conversation with the filmmakers will follow the screening.

Family Dance Jam at Abolitionist Place | Downtown Brooklyn

Come dance to hip hop, pop and global grooves at this high-energy outdoor dance party for all ages at Abolitionist Place! DJ Marc Bars will be spinning at this community dance party for all ages. There will be a Craft & Carry Pop-up Bar for 21+ as well as food and drinks for sale.

 

Youth Basketball Clinics at Brooklyn Bridge Park | DUMBO

Kids can join Brooklyn Bridge Park for free basketball clinics led by KING Hoops, NYC’s premier youth basketball organization. Participants can learn basketball basics as head coaches lead participants through drills and games. Free clinics are held on Saturday mornings from June through August (excluding holiday weekends). The first hour, 9:00am-10:00am, will be for beginner players who are brand new to the sport. Here children will learn the very basic fundamentals of the game, the rules of the game, and getting acclimated to having a ball in each player’s hands. The second hour, 10:00am-11:00am, will be for advanced beginners to intermediate players who have played a little bit more basketball experience. Emphasis will be on ball handling, passing, shooting form, defense, and learning to love the game. This event is rain or shine. It is recommended to bring your own ball. Advanced registration and fitness waivers are required, although walk-up registrations can be accommodated as space allows. Registration is by-the-week and dates open at start of the month. Capacity will be limited to 45 participants per age group.

 

Summer Saturdays for Families at Atlantic Terminal Mall | Downtown Brooklyn

Join Brooklyn Bridge Parents and Atlantic Terminal Mall for Summer Saturdays with free water play, kids activities, giveaways and more fun on Saturdays in June, July and August on the Atlantic Terminal Mall Plaza. Come out to play, cool off and make friends! The theme for this month is Brooklyn’s biggest cookie decorating extravaganza with One Girl Cookies.

The Governors Cup at Governors Island

What began as a fun idea: ​play­ing soc­cer on the beau­ti­ful grass of Gov­er­nors Island” has grown to become NYCs most in-demand soc­cer tour­na­ment. The annu­al event has grown to wel­come 100 teams, 1,000 play­ers, and many enthusiastic spec­ta­tors over two days in June. Spec­ta­tors may attend for free on game day, but by attend­ing assume all risks (e.g. stray balls, play­ers out­side the field, etc.)

Led by Greenlight staff member Megan, the Tween Grade Book Group is geared toward kids reading and discussing great contemporary and classic chapter books. Pizza is served! For June, the group discusses Ashley Herring Blake’s Ivy Aberdeen’s Letter to the World, a  the Stonewall honor novel. In the wake of a destructive tornado, one girl develops feelings for another in this stunning, tender story about emerging identity, perfect for fans of The Thing About Jellyfish.

The Fly Off Course Open on Governors Island

A one-day disc golf event on Governors Island featuring a custom 18-hole course built inside the moat of Fort Jay, with Manhattan skyline and Statue of Liberty views. Two tracks run simultaneously all day: a free open play doubles format open to everyone, and a competitive doubles tournament run by NYCDGA with prizes and an award ceremony. Discs are free to borrow, no experience required, and the course exists for one day only.

Free Learn to Ride Classes with Blazing Saddles on Governors Island

The 44th Annual Mermaid Parade in Coney Island

Since 1983, hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers and visitors from across the country — and around the world — have headed to the Coney Island shore for Coney Island USA’s annual Mermaid Parade. Inspired by the Coney Island Mardi Gras parades of old, the Mermaid Parade was transformed by its participants into a new kind of community celebration. By the late 1980s, it was at the top of every list of “must-do” things in New York, and is, without question, the official opening of summer in the city.
