In this day and age, parents and teachers know the educational value of social and emotional skills more than ever. In the wake of the pandemic, we see how interpersonal communication is a lifelong skill that needs to be fostered. Teaching these values in a memorable and effective way has proven a challenge for parents and teachers alike. The New York Society of Play’s approach to this challenge harnesses the power of play to teach simple, timeless virtues such as safety, trust, respect, cooperation, and consent. Through play, we learn how these values are an important part of the fun they have and the relationships they form. Games at the New York Society of Play are engaging; whether we are cooperating or competing against one another, we are learning, being challenged, and being considerate of one another. From theater games to Pokemon Cards to foam sword fighting in the park, our counselors are ready to play all day, leading groups in their favorite games, both old and new.
