Free kid-friendly activities in February

On February 13th, ring in the Lunar New Year of the Ox at Albee Square with a celebration featuring traditional lion dance performances. Snap a social-distanced selfie with the Lion Dancers or at the selfie station and you can pick up a traditional red envelope, which contain small prizes! This free event will take place at Albee Square in Downtown Brooklyn on Saturday 2/13 from 1.30 to 3 pm. Find out more here.

In celebration of the annual Great Backyard Bird Count, this month’s park scavenger hunt in Brooklyn Bridge Park will prompt you to search, count, and collect observations about birds. Registrants will receive a PDF copy of the activity a few days before the event. There will be an opportunity to stop by a prize table at the back of the Environmental Education Center and share your completed hunt with the Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy! This event is free and suitable for kids of all ages! You can start and end the scavenger hunt at any time, but you can only pick up prizes or extra printed copies of the hunt between the hours of 1:00 PM- 4:00 PM at 99 Plymouth Street. RSVP here.

CELEBRATE YOUR VALENTINE at Empire Stores in DUMBO with free cotton candy, pop-up market and photo-op on SATURDAY FEBRUARY 13 from 12PM to 4PM.

A Heart Sculpture and just the right size for photos with loved ones has been installed on the Empire Stores Patio in DUMBO. Photos can be captured on-site with prints to take home via the Self Portrait Project, courtesy of the Dumbo Improvement District. From 5 to 9pm that evening, photos will be projected on the Manhattan Bridge at dimensions of 65 by 40 feet; optimal viewing is from the Pearl Street Triangle. A link to digital photos will be available on the @dumbobrooklyn Instagram account on February 20. The sculpture will stay until end of the month.

The Brooklyn Public Library annex in DUMBO hands out free “Craft Grab and Go Kits” for children to take home every week. This week’s kit is sculpture based with a Grab and Go Kit for adults and older teens — try your hand at making your own air-dry pottery. (They have also included a play-dough kit so any small humans in your household won’t feel left out!). The Annex is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m to pick up and drop-off of books and get your weekly craft kit.

Aerialist + Acrobats Residency at BKLYN Studios in City Point showcasing works-in-progress and show-ready acts of dazzling skills, innovative movements, and super-human strength and flexibility.
